People wear jewelry as part of religious cerernonies, dating, engagements, marriages,
anniversaries, making fashion statements and political statements, and in other contexts.
One maritime tradition includes having an ear pierced after crossing the equator on a ship.
Rings are exchanged in wedding ceremonies around the world. Necklaces are worn by men
and women for a variety of reasons, including the expression of personal religion. Culture
dictates various aspects of jewelry wearing, including the designation of a "ring finger" to
signify that one is married.
