Personal Reflection

1. How do you feel about aging? Do you dread getting older, or look forward to it? Do you
see advanced age as a challenge or something to fear?
What do I really feel? Actually, I don’t know. I’m young and healthy but
sometimes I still feel like a kid and wanted to grow up more. But aging is just
normal. I don’t think that the public or people round you will be shocked by the
fact that I get older. All I know is that Aging is not the “Lost of youth” but a new
beginning and a new stage of opportunity and strength. As we continue to strive
the true meaning of being and adult, we must continue to live and turn it into
decades.

2. Have you ever cared for an elderly person before? If so, what was that experience like?
How do you feel about caring for older adults in your nursing practice?
No, I never have cared for an elderly person before but given a chance I
would probably would want to experience it.
Caring for an elderly person is like doing work that has the potential to
make a difference in someone's life. I like making someone smile and doing little
things to make a person's day better. Making my grandparents smile is so
priceless that I would like to trade anything to see that beautiful smile again. Also,
it is essential that in nursing practice to feel the desire to help. By showing both
empathy and compassion, and will let the person know that they care about them.
3. What do you think about nurses who work in nursing homes? Have you ever considered a
career in gerontology? What are the positives you can see about developing expertise in
this field of nursing?
I think they are amazing for being so responsible for the physical care and
emotional support of someone who can no longer care for them self, due to
illness, injury or disability. I did consider a career in gerontology but it wasn’t my
calling. However, I would probably be able to experience it through my journey
and in my life. Developing an expertise in the field of nursing is a rough road that
you will go through more than a thousand challenges and sometimes you would
think to give up yet you still choose to stand up and brake every walls in your
way. Also, I believe nurses are capable of excelling in their chosen field or
expertise. As long as we are willing to absorb information, have a positive attitude
towards learning, be able to accept constructive criticism and adapt to new
environments and cultures. Furthermore, nurses provide a roadmap to a patient
care decisions and professional development. Nursing is a dynamic, constantly
evolving profession. Eventually the novice will become an expert and it will be
only a matter of time before he or she begins to give back and help other new
nurses become proficient and skilled.
