Grade 11- Internal Assessment

Speaking Test
Part 1: Introduction and interview (3 marks)

Part 2: Describing pictures (4 marks)

Part 3: Speaking on a given topic (3 marks)

Total Marks: 10
Time: 10-15 min.

Format
The students will be asked three/four questions on their
personal affairs and immediate events.
Time: 3 minutes

E.g.
1. Can you tell us a few things about yourself in brief?
2. What do you plan to do after your high school?
3. How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected you and your
family?

Part 1: Introduction and Interview


The students will be given a visual text and they are
expected to describe it and extend the idea.

Preparation time: 1 minute (students can make brief notes)


Speaking time: 2 minutes

Part 2: Describing pictures


Students will be asked to speak on a familiar topic.
E.g.
My Family
In modern times, it is not uncommon to find nuclear
families. What kind of family do you live in? What are the
advantages and disadvantages of living in a nuclear family.

Preparation time: 1 minute (students can make notes)


Speaking time: 2 minutes

Part 3: Speaking on a given topic


Concluding note from the examiner.
Time: 1 minute

Marking Standards
1. Pronunciation
This criterion refers to the ability to produce comprehensible speech
to fulfill the Speaking Test requirements. The indicators will be the
amount of strain caused to the listener, the amount of the speech
which is unintelligible and the noticeability of influence.

2. Fluency and coherence


This refers to the ability to talk with normal levels of continuity, rate
and effort and to link ideas and language together to form coherent,
connected speech. The key indicators of fluency are consistent
speech rate and continuity. The key indicators of coherence are
logical sequencing of sentences, clear marking of stages in a
discussion, narration or argument, and the unnoticeable use of
cohesive devices.
3. Vocabulary
The criterion refers to the range of vocabulary used and the
precision with which meanings and attitudes can be expressed. The
key indicators are variety of words used, the adequacy and
appropriateness of the words used.

4. Grammar
This refers to the range and the accurate and appropriate use of the
test taker’s grammatical resource. The key indicators are the
candidate’s ability to use simple, compound and complex sentences,
his/her ability to make concessions and conditional expressions
using accurate structures.

Part 1: Introduction and interview


In this part of the speaking test, you will see a visual text and you will have to
describe it in detail and make connections to your experience if possible.

You have one minute time to think about what you are going to say, and two
minutes to speak. You can take notes to help you if you wish.

Part 2: Describing a picture


In this part, you will be given a topic and you will have to speak
on the topic for 2 minutes. You have one minute time to think
about what you are going to say. You can take notes to help you if
you wish.

Describe an individual who you regard as a role model.

You should say:


• Who s/he is
• Why you look up to him/her
• Which of his/her characteristics you admire
And explain what makes a person a good role model especially for
young people today.
