1 New Features
1.1 Protection Relays and Protection Schemes using MODELS
ATPDesigner provides the user simulating the behaviour of protection relays and displaying the Trip
Command of protection relays directly in the network graphics. The figure below presents an example.
The power network shows seven measuring locations, which are represented by the circuit-breakers
Cb1..5 with assigned measuring location M1..5 and the combination of a [probe Pbx + switch Swtx]. This
feature is only available for a 3-pole control signal, not for 1-pole control signals of switches and circuit-
breakers.

The algorithm of a simple over current relay has been implemented using MODELS (see network
element External .ATP-File Protection in the figure above at the left upper corner). The MODELS data
are written in a simple text file. This example including the MODELS data file is part of the .NET-files
delivered with ATPDesigner (see .NET-File 49).

1.1.1 How Does It Work ?

After the simulation of the transients has been succesfully finalised, ATPDesigner analyses the
information stored in the .LST-file to identify the Open and Close Commands of the switches. Therefore
it is required to enable the option “Echo to .LST-file” for all switches Swtx (see settings dialog below).
For circuit breakers Cbx it is automatically enabled. The figure below shows an example copied out of a
.LST-file, which shows the information created by the ATP in case of opening or closing a switch or a
circuit-breaker.

Page 3 of 3 Pages
ATPDesigner V 2.00.00 Update Documentation 03. July 2008

ATPDesigner displays the Opening or Closing State and the Tripping Time using the tooltip
technology well known from the feature Short Circuit Results. If the mouse cursor has been moved
“over” the corresponding measuring location or the corresponding probe, ATPDesigner automatically
creates a tooltip presenting the Tripping Time related to the start time (= 0ms) of the networ simulation.
In addition a frame containing OPEN or CLOSED will be drawn nearby the circuit-breaker or switch
which has been opened or closed to indicate, that a tooltip can be opened via a mouse cursor touch of
the corresponding measuring location (red triangle) of the circuit breaker Cb1..5 or the probe Prbx.

1.1.2 What About the User Actions ?

Before starting such a network simulation with Protection Relays, the user must assign the circuit-
breaker Cb1..5 or the switch of the combination [probe Prbx + switch Swtx] to an OUTPUT signal of the
MODELS data using the settings of the circuit-breaker or switch shown below. All output signals of
MODELS data will be automatically scanned and identified by ATPDesigner, if the .ATP-File will be
written. All output signals will be automatically added to the TACS Management System and are
available in the settings dialogs of circuit-breakers and switches. The user can easily select one of the
signals via a ComboBox as shown below.

Ø Please don’t forget to enable “Echo to .LST-file” for the switch.

1.2 Time Limited License of ATPDesigner

It is now possible to order a time limited license of ATPDesigner using a use-by date. More details can
be read in the homepage www.atpdesigner.de , sub page HOW TO ORDER.

1.3 Progress Bars to Indicate System Status of ATPDesigner

A progress bar has been added to the status bar to indicate the internal status and progress of
ATPDesigner during several processes e.g. loading a .NET-file or processing the Short Circuit Analysis.

2 Improvements
2.1 Zooming the Network Graphics by CTRL + Left Mouse Button
If the CTRL key has been pressed, a Zoom Frame can be set pressing the Left Mouse Button down
and moving the mouse cursor. If the left mouse button will be released, ATPDesigner tries to adjust the
part of the power network inside the zoom frame to the pc screen.

2.2 Right Mouse Button Menu: Fixed Position – Picture in the Background
Using the new feature Fixed Position, the x/y-position of a Text Frame
or a Picture can be set to a fixed screen position.

A fixed picture can be also used as a Background Picture. Network

elements which are drawn “in front of the background picture” will be
selected first by a left mouse button click.

Learn more using the .NET-file 49.

2.3 Main Menu Edit, Sub Menu: Refresh

Sometimes it is necessary to refresh (=
redraw) the network graphics without
processing any modifications. Now it
can be done using this menu item or
using the toolbar button shown at the
right.

2.4 F3: Displaying Node Names in Tooltips

In addition the node names of the network elements will be now displayed in Tooltips, if the mouse
cursor has been moved “over” the corresponding network element.

2.5 Dialog: Properties of Network Element …

The properties dialog has been redesigned. This dialog can be opened, if a network element has been
first selected by a left mouse button click. The diaolg presents e.g. the node names and additional
information for all nodes of the network elements.

These information can be used e.g. to check the node names of connected network elements.
Nevertheless these information are more related to the development and type testing team of
ATPDesigner.

2.6 Checking Network Topology

The algorithm to check the network topology has been improved. If ATPDesigner now detects network
elements in trouble (e.g. not connected network elements) reading a .NET-file, such network elements
will be automatically disabled. ATPDesigner presents these information using a message box.

ATPDesigner checks also the network topology, if important modifications of the power network has
been done e.g. a new network element has been added. If ATPDesigner detects network elements in
trouble, these network elements will be automatically marked with a red frame and/or disabled.

2.7 .ATP-Files containing BLANKS

Such file names may confuse the ATP, because BLANKS are used as command line delimiter for
windows console software tools. For such cases ATPDesigner creates a temporary folder c:\temp,
creates a copy of the .ATP-file deleting all blanks, starts the network simulation and copies the resulting
.PL4- and .LST-files back to the working directory. Please don’t forget to delete the temporary folder
c:\temp. There is no action required by the user beside deleting the temporary folder.

This feature has been proposed by students using ATPDesigner and ATP in their projects executing
both software tools under Microsoft Windows Vista. Thanks for that proposal.

2.8 Electrical Machine

The electrical data can be now set also in Ohm. The use of this model during a bachelor thesis has
shown, that electrical data in Ohm are more convenient as the electrical data in p.u.

ATPDesigner V 2.00.00 Update Documentation 03. July 2008

2.9 FIND Dialog

ATPDesigner now presents also Disabled
Network Elements in the tree. It is
possible to select one of these network
elements by a left mouse button click and
to identify its position in the power network
graphics using the FIND button.

The hese network element will be marked

with a red frame. Please note, that the red
frames will be not saved in the .NET-file.

2.10 Animated Mouse Cursor

Some animated mouse cursors are available
now and can be selected in the settings dialog
Program Settings. The animated cursor will
be used to indicate, that ATP is still running in
the background.

Page 9 of 9 Pages
ATPDesigner V 2.00.00 Update Documentation 03. July 2008

2.11 Network Configuration

The setting Power Network Frequency fn
has been implemented. This setting is
identical with the setting fn of Network Infeed
Network 1 shown below. Both settings will be
updated automatically if one has been
changed.

If the network element Network Infeed

Network 1 will be NOT used in a power
network, the power network frequency can be
now set in the dialog shown at the right.

2.12 Short Circuit Analysis Results: Presented in Tooltips

The Short Circuit Analysis Results feature has been totally
reengineered. Now, the calculation of voltage and current phasors
based on ATP’s Steady State Analysis can be started in the same
way as the calculation process ot the transient signals.

The reason was a instability in the runtime system of the Visual

Studio, which may corrupt ATPDesigner sometimes.
Workarounds could not be found.

Ø Starting the calculation of voltage and current phasors (ATP’s Steady State Analysis),
displaying the information as part of the power network graphics and/or in tooltips.

Ø Removing all information from the power network graphics, also removing the tooltips.
Please note: This function will be also automatically procesed by ATPDesigner, if the calculation
ot the transient data has been started.

Page 10 of 10 Pages
ATPDesigner V 2.00.00 Update Documentation 03. July 2008

Ø Displaying all node related information in a spread sheet.

It is possible to copy these information e.g. to Excel via the clipboard (Copy).

In addition the results of the calculation will be presented in a tooltip, if the mouse cursor has been
moved “over” the measuring location of a circuit-breaker Cb1..5 or a probe Prbx. Some of these tooltips
consist of 2 or 3 lines, which can be addressed using the Up and Down Cursor of the keyboard.

Read also Short Circuit Analysis Results Displayed in a Tooltip Moving Cursor to Network
Elements.

Page 11 of 11 Pages
ATPDesigner V 2.00.00 Update Documentation 03. July 2008

The tooltip shown below consists of 3 lines.

Short Circuit Results will be displayed not only for circuit-breakers and probes, but also for lines and
busbars. Nominal voltage Vnom and/or maximum current Imax can be set in the settings dialog of these
network elements.

2.12.1 Single-Circuit Line

If one phase current exceeds the setting Imax of the line, ATPDesigner draws a red frame around the line
to indicate that the line is in trouble.

Page 12 of 12 Pages

2.12.2 Busbar

2.12.3 Transformer
If the current flowing through the HV or LV winding of the transformer exceeds the rated current of the
winding, ATPDesigner draws a red frame to indicate that this network element is in trouble.

Moving the mouse cursor “over” the shape of a tranformer ATPDesigner presents the phase currents at
both windings in A and in % of the rated phase current in a tooltip.

2.13 Busbar
New settings:

Ø Nominal Voltage Vnom

Ø User specific Name
Ø 2..20 Pt. Shape
Ø Del - Button

The nominal voltage Vnom will be used

to calculate the voltage in % as result
of the Short Circuit Analysis (based on
ATP’s Steady State Analysis).

Name: The user specific name will be

displayed in the network graphics.

13: 2..20 Pts. standard

A new, flexible shape has been added
with 2 up to 20 nodes.

Del-Button to delete the user specific

name of the busbar.

2.14 Series Connection Probe + Switch

ATPDesigner adds automatically a 10-12Ohm resistance between the probe and the switch to satisfy the
ATP interface between the electric power network and TACS. Without using this resistance ATP may be
not able to assign the TACS signals to the nodes of the electrical power network.

Page 15 of 15 Pages
ATPDesigner V 2.00.00 Update Documentation 03. July 2008

3 Bug Fixes
The bug fixes are related to all existing ATPDesigner releases.

3.1 Main Menu Edit, Sub Menu Item: Enable All

ATPDesigner didn’t check the connection of network elements, after a disabled network element has
been enabled. Therefore it may be possible, that nodes will be not connected although their x/y-
coordinates on the screen are identically.

3.2 Status Bar

The indicator “Substation CT/VT enabled” shows the
enable/disable state of CT’s and VT’s of the
substation reverse. It has been fixed. In addition the
indicator “Substation CT/VT enabled” has been
changed to “CtVT +” (enabled) and “CtVT –“
(disabled).

3.3 Circuit Breaker Cb2 and Cb5

The TACS output signals IAS_M2 and IAS_M5, which corresponds to the measuring locations M2 and
M5 of the circuit-breakers Cb2 and Cb5, were mapped to the phase currents phase C, but not to the
phase currents of phase A.

3.4 Compatibilty to Microsoft Windows Vista

It was necessary to implement some bugfixes and workarounds to improve the compatibility of
ATPDesigner to Microsoft Windows Vista operation system. Especially the handling of Edit Fields was
in trouble. It was sometimes not possible to enter 8.3, but it was possible to enter 8. The reasons could
not be identified, but bugfixes were found.

It must be stated here, that ATPDesigner has been and will be further developped using Microsoft Visual
Studio Standard 2005 (and next 2008) under Microsoft Windows XP using only the Microsoft Foundation
Classes (MFC). Therefore these imcompatibilities are really not to understand, but they were existing.
Thanks to the students to test ATPDesigner and ATP under Windows Vista.

3.5 Transformer
If the vector group Dd0 and the drawing direction Down has been selected, it was not possible to select
the transformer shape by a left mouse button click.

3.6 Open/Close Button in the Toolbar

The toolbar buttons have been only enabled, if a circuit-breaker with
assigned measuring location has been selected by a left mouse
button click first. Now the toolbar button will be enabled for all circuit-
breakers.

4 New Examples (.NET – Files)

After the ATPDesigner setup has been finalised, the user will find some .NET-files, which makes it more
easy to start with ATPDesigner. In additon the user can study the features of ATPDesigner analysing
these examples. The content of each .NET-file is explained in the chapter Examples and Data Cases in
the help file. The new .NET-files for the current release:

.NET - File 47
WYE-connected load based on three single Load Impedances, Splitter, Busbars and Probes

.NET - File 48
DELTA-connected load based on three single Load Impedances, Splitter, Busbars and Probes

.NET - File 49
Simulating Protection Schemes using MODELS to implement the algorithms (Protection.mod: MODELS
data for a simple OC Proetction Relay)

Please note, that all .NET-files have been converted to the current .NET-file version V 3.3 – 14.04.2008.
Therfore it is not possible to read these .NET-files using older ATPDesigner releases.
