Short Description of the Research:

Under the New Normal setting in education, pupils have undergone different
learning modalities since face to face is not available at the moment due to the Covid 19
Pandemic. Because of this reason, the low performance of pupils in terms of academic, is
really remarkable, considering the factors that might affect their focus finding a solution to
this problem can bring hope to learners, especially now that their concentration under home
schooling is greatly affected in different ways.

“Improving the Academic Performance of Grade Two Pupils under Modular…

INTRODUCTION

Trying to lessen the spread of the covid 19 infection, the government has ordered

social distancing, learners are not excluded from this, so the Department of Education

(DepEd), while trying to maintain its commitment to ensure not only the safety of the

learners but as well as the teachers and parents, has ordered no face-to-face learning until

the situation is controllable.

Under the New Normal setting in education, pupils have undergone different

learning modalities, since face-to-face is not available at the moment, the suited modality

to use in the place of the researcher is the Modular Learning Approach.

Home schooling can be really new to learners since they are used to the old way of

learning, where teachers teach them and guide them while they are doing the task or while

the learning happens, there is an instant communication and interaction with this manner,

but because of the current situation, the pace was so fast that pupils cannot cope up easily

with the transition, making them sometimes or to be honest most of the time not

participating in their own modules, performance task sent to them aren’t even answered

and done therefore resulting to low academic performance, which can be seen by their

academic performance last school year 2020-2021.qq

Effective learning happens with pupils participating with the activities prepared by

the teacher. Teachers play a very important role in motivating their students. A pupil may

be motivated to study but not motivated enough to learn. It can sometimes rely on how the

teacher motivates his/her pupils to excel or strive to be at their best.

1
“Improving the Academic Performance of Grade Two Pupils under Modular…

Research suggests that motivation can be manipulated through certain instructional

practices, although studies demonstrate both positive and negative effects. The use of

rewards may either encourage or diminish motivation, depending on the type of rewards

and the context in which they are given (Lai 2011). Positive reinforcement can be done as

motivation, it can be in the form of reward or recognition. There are several challenges to

assess motivation and how effective it is, but a lot or researches has been done and many

of those researches has proven that right motivation can lead to good results.

In Sto, Nino Elementary School, the Grade Two pupils last school year 2020-2021

under section Camia, showed low performance level in their academics. Their first and

second quarter grades showed that they are not participating in mostly of the given task

performances sent to them, towards their third and fourth quarter, some got even more

worse to the point that they are not even answering their own modules, even after numerous

attempts to reprimand them of their behavior, and calling the attention of their parents and

guardians, very few improvements were seen.

The researcher even made a checklist of the pupil’s done and undone performances

and had their parents signed after it to let them know of the standing of their daughter/ son

with regards to their learning, the researcher even tried to explain the consequences of their

children’s acts toward the given performances and outputs which were neglected, but still

even up to now ( fourth quarter.) no significant differences were still noted.

Even with the effort of the adviser to talk to the parents to let them know what their

daughter/ son is doing in terms of their learning and asking what could have been the

problem, their constant answer would be, that their son / daughter is tired, not wanting to

answer any module, doesn’t want to make or finish the task given to them, and that they

2
“Improving the Academic Performance of Grade Two Pupils under Modular…

could not force them even if they wanted to. Some would even say, they listened more to

their teachers than to them who are their parents. Therefore, their mastery of the

competencies is being compromised in this manner.

With this situation, the researcher wishes to conduct an action research that aims to

find out if project (HELP) Hone and Engage Learners through Proper motivation can

improve learners’ academic performance so it can be of great help for pupils and parents

with our new normal setting in education.

The learners will undergo a 12-week of monitoring; half of the total number of the

incoming grade two pupils under section Camia will fall under the controlled group and

the rest for the experimental group who will undertake Project HELP.

The controlled group will be subjected to verbal reprimanding only, and follow-

ups, while the experimental group will be under the Project HELP which include reward

incentive, praising, online assessment, certificates and recognitions.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Together with motivation, engagement is viewed in the literature as very important

for enhanced learning outcomes of all students (Schlechty, 2001; Woolfolk & Margetts,

2007). Motivation is seen as a pre-requisite of and a necessary element for student

engagement in learning. Student engagement in learning is not only an end in itself but it

is also a means to the end of students achieving sound academic outcomes (Russell, Ainley

& Frydenberg, 2005; Ryan & Deci, 2009). This is important because authentic engagement

may lead to higher academic achievement throughout student life (Zyngier, 2008).

Tilya (2012), in his study about Educational assessment states that recently the cry

from parents and other stakeholders has been about poor results from our primary and

secondary schools, he suggested that if teachers motivate students there will be

improvement in academic performance which in turn will benefit community as whole.

Takeuchi (2009) studied about what can teachers do to motivate their students in

Japan. He found that teachers used motivational strategies in a variety of ways and each

strategy varied with students’ motivation.

Motivation refers to reasons that underlie behavior that is characterized by

willingness and desire (Guay et al., 2010, p. 712). It is the Paraphrasing Gredler, Broussard

and Garrison (2004) broadly define motivation as “the characteristic that moves us to do

or not to do something” (p. 106). Motivation involves a constellation of closely related

beliefs, perceptions, values, interests, and actions. Intrinsic motivation is animated by

personal enjoyment, interest, or pleasure, whereas extrinsic motivation is governed by

reinforcement contingencies (Lai 2011).

4
“Improving the Academic Performance of Grade Two Pupils under Modular…

Numerous research studies have shown that intrinsically motivated students have

higher achievement levels, lower levels of anxiety and higher perceptions of competence

and engagement in learning than students who are extrinsically motivated (Wigfield &

Eccles, 2002; Wigfield & Waguer, 2005).

To assess student motivation researchers also have to examine engagement in and

as part of learning. Blumenfeld, Kempler and Krajcik (2006) argue that motivation alone

is necessary but not sufficient for academic achievement. However, Hufton, Elliott and

lllushin (2002) believe that high levels of engagement show high levels of motivation.

Cervantes 2019, even made a research on the use of proper motivation to combat

absenteeism, she also noted that, the use of rewards such as tokens, additional points, and

medals were effective interventions to minimize the extreme absenteeism of her grade 11

TVL. Her study showed that learners most likely to attend to their classes if they are

recognized and given awards.

According to Responsive Classroom (2019), publicly recognizing children’s

accomplishments can benefit their learning and the overall school climate. This implies

that motivation can play a crucial part in a child’s attitude towards learning.

Research Questions

The present study aimed to find solution/s to the low level of pupil’s participation

in the new normal setting in education under the Modular Distance learning, using the

HELP Technique under the academic year 2021- 2022 at Sto. Nino Elementary School.

Specifically, it aimed to find answers to the following questions:

1. How is the academic performance of the two groups prior to the use of the HELP

technique?

1.1 Controlled groups

1.2 Experimental group

2. Is there a significant difference in the academic performance of the controlled

group using formal reproof (verbal reprimanding)?

3. Is there a significant difference in the academic performance of the experimental

group using the HELP Technique?

4. Is there a significant improvement in the academic performance of the controlled

group using formal reproof (verbal reprimanding)?

5. Is there a significant improvement in the academic performance of the

experimental group using the HELP Technique?

6. Which among the two, formal reproof (verbal reprimanding) and HELP

technique is effective in solving poor academic performance of pupils?

6
“Improving the Academic Performance of Grade Two Pupils under Modular…

Hypotheses

In this study, the researcher hypothesized that:

1. There is no significant difference between the academic performance of the

controlled and experimental groups using the HELP technique.

2. There is no significant improvement in the academic performance of the

controlled group using the formal reproof (verbal reprimanding).

3. There is no significant improvement in the academic performance of the

experimental group using the HELP Technique.

Significance of the Study

This study described the current situation of the learners in Sto. Nino Elementary

School, specifically among the Grade Two Camia pupils prior to the use of the Project

HELP. It also sought to determine the if there will be significant differences with the

learners academic performance before and after the use of the Project HELP.

This study would be of great help to the following persons

The teachers - the findings of this study will give the teachers possible solutions to the

problems arousing regarding the low performance of pupils, and how or what possible

ways can they do or adopt to alleviate the problem.

The pupils – this study will bring awareness to pupils on how they can find solution with

their low performance in school under the new normal setting in education.

7
“Improving the Academic Performance of Grade Two Pupils under Modular…

The parents – Supervising heir children learning at home can be very difficult and

stressing, but with Project HELP learning can be attain and enjoying.,

The future researchers - The findings of this study can bring solutions or can be adopted

to solve or try its effectivity on other levels in education to improve pupils’ low

performance , it can also be a basis for evaluation.

Scope and Limitations

This study described the performance of the controlled and experimental group

prior to the use of the HELP technique. The differences in the performance of the controlled

group prior and after the use of the formal reproof or verbal reprimanding were also

determined as well as if there will be significant change in the academic performances of

the pupils after using the said intervention. Formal reproof was only delimited to talking to

the learners and notifying them about their performances. For the experimental group, the

Hone and Engage Learners through Proper Motivation (HELP) Technique was used in

which the learners will undergo a 12-week extrinsic motivational procedure.

The improvement in the academic performance of the learners using both formal

reproof and HELP technique will also be identified.

METHODS

Type of Research

The researcher choses this study to be an action research. It is a method used for

improving conditions and practices (Lingard et.al., 2008; Whitehead et.al., 2003). Action

research also generates solutions to practical problems (Meyer, 2002).

This study uses both quantitative and descriptive research design as it sought to

describe the situation before and after the use of the Project HELP to the learners. This

action research will also evaluate the effectiveness of the strategy used (HELP) in helping

learners with poor academic performance. In order to acquire the needed information, the

researcher will gathere the academic performance of the grade two Camia pupils for the

First Quarter of the School Year 2021 – 2022, and then the Second Quarter after the use of

the Project HELP.

Respondents

The subjects of the study were two groups from Grade Two pupils under section

Camia of the school year 2021 – 2022 at Sto . Nino Elementary School. The participants

are all the pupils of the said section, two groups will be formed, for the learners for the

controlled and experimental group. They will be randomly selected to belong to each of

the group.

9
“Improving the Academic Performance of Grade Two Pupils under Modular…

Sampling Method

This action research used the simple random sampling where every member of the

population has equal chance of being selected. The subjects will be half of the total number

of pupils under section Camia, they will fall under the experimental group and the rest

under controlled group.

Proposed Innovation/Intervention/Strategy

The researcher will utilize her own devised technique called the Project HELP,

(Hone and Engage Learners through Proper motivation) in trying to help aid in the low

academic performances of the Grade Two Camia learners.

The Project HELP is a 12-week extrinsic motivational procedure for the Grade Two

Camia learners. According to Gopalan et. al (2017), an individual is extrinsically motivated

if they are receiving any reward, therefore, the researcher anchored her study in this theory

which was also proven in the study of Cervantes (2019).

The research will use positive reinforcement method called Project HELP; learners

under controlled group will only be using verbal reprimanding and follow ups; while the

experimental group will use the HELP strategy wherein, they will be rewarded for their

good performances.

“Improving the Academic Performance of Grade Two Pupils under Modular…

Procedures for the Project HELP is presented below.

There will be a performance-based reward for the learners. It will be a

pointing system where they need to earn points by doing specific tasks given by the teacher,

and those points will be turned into rewards.

70 100
80 – 90
points points
points

Points will be accumulated and then later on exchange for a prize every after 4 weeks.

Points are as follows: Rewards are as follows:

70 points ----- pencil and bronze badge
Modules all done 10 points
80 -90 points -- pencil, sweets and

Performance task submitted 20 points silver badge

100 points ----- crayons, notebook,
Attended online kumustahan 10 points golden badge and certificate

Controlled group will only be limited to verbal reprimanding and follow ups; while

the experimental group will be under the Project HELP strategy, which includes feedback

on accomplishments of the child and reward performance based.

On the first and second month, pupils will collect points depending on the

performances they made each week, points will be counted at the end of each month during

the online Kumustahan ( points are stated above) . There will also be punishments for those

11
“Improving the Academic Performance of Grade Two Pupils under Modular…

who will not make or submit the task given to them, they will lose points depending on the

task or performances they missed.

As some would say or argue with this strategy, the researcher fastened it with the

Incentive Theory of Motivation which states that the people can be motivated using

extrinsic factors, it also argues that people are more motivated to perform activities if they

receive a reward afterward, rather than simply because they enjoy the activities themselves

(Lumen, 2018), the researcher also believes that even in our daily routine, if we did our

jobs well, good things will come to us as the result of our good performances.

At the end of each month, during the online kumustahan, pupils will be collecting

and counting all the points they gathered for the whole month in exchange for the reward.

They will be announced and given praised, certificates and rewards, parents will also be

commended and given certificates.

On the Third month, parents will be asked to give feedbacks on how their child is

doing now (both the controlled and experimental group) with regards to their studies. The

learner’s academic performances will also be computed to assess if there were differences

before and after the use of the Project HELP.

Sources of Data/Instruments

This study will utilize the form 138 or the pupils’ report card as the primary

instrument in order to determine the academic performances of the grade Two

Camia pupils before and after the use of the HELP technique for the experimental

group. Unstructured questionnaire will also be used to get the feedback and views

12
“Improving the Academic Performance of Grade Two Pupils under Modular…

of the parents regarding the use of the HELP technique to their son/daughter. Verbal

reprimanding will be used for the controlled group and for the experimental group

the HELP technique.

Data Collection Procedure

In gathering the data needed for this study, the researcher first sought the

permission of the Schools’ Division Superintendent, District Supervisor as well as the

principal assigned in the school to cover the Grade II Camia pupils as respondents in her

study.

The researcher will collect the academic performances of the learners for the First

Quarter, take note of them before the use of the HELP Technique.

The researcher will group the learner into two, one for the controlled group and the

other the experimental group. All of the pupils will be participating in the said research

they will be randomly selected, to belong to the controlled group, who will be verbally

reprimanded and be given follow-ups only, while the for the experimental group, the use

of the HELP technique.

The participants of this study will be subjected to an extrinsic motivation. All

learners’ progress, if there will be, will be noted. Pupils’ performances, participation,

outputs, written works and modules will be strictly monitored by the teacher-researcher for

three months. Parents’ feedback will also be noted, during the first, second and last month

of the study. The academic performances and parent’s feedback will be use to measure the

effectivity of the HELP Technique.

13
“Improving the Academic Performance of Grade Two Pupils under Modular…

Ethical Considerations

The result of the research shows truth and honesty in all its aspects. Parents were

informed about the nature of the study and its need. Confidentiality was also secured that

all the answers and feedback will be handled with secrecy, protecting all participants’

answers. Parental consent will be sent to all learners who will be participating in this study
