2. Was there a problem or an issue that the writer had mentioned
in the article? If yes, state the issue or problem.
3. What is your reaction or opinion about this article?
4. What type of editorial do you think this issue is?

What Is It
Reactions, issues, views, comments are forms of expression in editorial that discuss an
issue affecting the lives of people.
Editorial is a short essay that shares an individual’s opinion
about current event or social issue. The goal of a good editorial is to persuade the readers to
consider your perspective and change their opinion. Editorials often focus on controversial
issues with widely different viewpoints.
If the news story does not allow the expression of opinion in its content, it is in the
editorial where a writer may express his/ her opinion based from the gathered facts and
observations.
Here are the different Types of Editorials with corresponding example:
Editorial of Interpretive - explains and provides background information on an event or issue. It aims to
raise awareness and discuss how the topic is relevant to the reader.
Editorial of Criticism - focuses on the various causes of a problem and suggests a solution. For example,
you might critique a policy that relates your issue in order to advocate for a specific change.
Editorial of Persuasive- appeals directly to the reader and encourages them to take action. It focuses on
the reader's ability to change a situation by following your advice.
Editorial of Praising - shows appreciation for a person or organization based on their involvement in an
issue.
3
In writing you should follow the correct mechanics such as:
1. Indention
2. Neatness and orderliness
3. Punctuation marks
4. Capitalization
5. Margin
Indention Capitalization
Parents just like their children, look forward to having summer fun with their children.
They spend time with their children in the house as they got to learn new skills like cooking!
Nowadays girls and boys alike are fond of tinkering with the utensils in the kitchen.
Margin
The period (.), comma (,), exclamation point (!), and question mark (?) are all examples of
punctuation marks.
When a paragraph has no erasures, it is considered neat or it shows neatness.
How to write an editorial?
Once you know the type of editorial you want to write and the basic components you
need to include, you can begin the writing process. If you are writing an editorial for a class
or work assignment, refer back to the prompt frequently during the planning process. An
editorial with specific classroom guidelines will likely be very different than an opinion piece
published in a magazine or newspaper. Regardless of why you are writing your editorial, you
can use these steps to create a strong foundation for a successful editorial paper:
Steps:
1. Decide on a topic.
2. Research your topic.
3. Create an outline.
4. Start to write.
5. Proofread.

Part A. Directions. Read the following excerpt from an article and answer the questions that
follow.
Module delivery, parents answering activity sheets: Challenges seen in distance
learning simulations
Jaehwa Bernardo, ABS-CBN News
MANILA — As schools across the country continued to conduct dry runs of the implementation of distance
learning, educators have identified several challenges with the new way of delivering lessons to students at
home.
Among them are the distances that teachers have to cover in order to distribute self-learning modules (SLMs) to
their students' houses, according to Estela Cariño, director of the Department of Education's office in the
Cagayan Valley region.
"One of the major challenges experienced by the teacher, of course, would be the distance of the houses of
these learners and the kind of road that they have to pass through, some have to cross rivers," Cariño said in a
virtual press briefing on Monday.
Cariño also said there are learners who do not have parents that could help them in studying their lessons at
home while there are parents who answer the SLMs for their children.
To resolve these issues, Cariño said the DepEd in Cagayan Valley is coordinating with local officials and law
enforcers to help teachers in distributing the SLMs.
Distribution and retrieval of SLMs will be done quarterly in coastal areas and monthly in the mainland to avoid
constantly exposing teachers to the threat of COVID-19, said Cariño.
Schools also assigned "para-teachers" to guide learners at home while teachers living in certain barangays or
puroks were instructed to tutor the learners in their community, she added.
Cariño also appealed to parents to refrain from answering the self-learning modules so their children could truly
learn.
"The time is quite long for their children to really answer it by themselves and some teachers will really be guiding
them," she said.
Cariño also shared that only few schools in the region would be doing online learning due to unstable internet
connectivity.
Rowen Ursolina, who teaches at Alabat Island National High School in Quezon province, admitted that "living in
an island is already a challenge" for distance learning.
Alabat Island National High School will also be coordinating with local officials to distribute and retrieve learning
modules.
Teachers in the island are also concerned that their students may not be the ones answering the activity sheets,
Ursolina said.
"We are not sure nasilangabaangsumagotsa activity sheets naamingpinadalasoiyongpo ay
aminggagawanngparaan," she said.
(We are not sure if they're the ones answering the activity sheets that we sent so we're going to find a way to
address that.)
Teachers in the island will also do "home visits," especially to students whose parents are unable to teach them,
said Ursolina.
Education Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio earlier said the pandemic was the perfect time for parents to
teach their children honesty in answering learning materials.
Under the learning continuity plan, the department offered schools a "menu" of ways to deliver lessons to
students: printed and digital modules, online classes, television, and radio.
The DepEd has given schools the freedom to decide which learning modality to implement, depending on the
available resources and what is most suitable to the students.
In-person classes remain prohibited pending the availability of a vaccine against COVID-19, which has infected
over 217,000 in the country.
Classes in public schools are scheduled to start on October 5. Private schools, meanwhile, are allowed to start
earlier as long as they implement distance learning.
5
2. Should parents assist their children in working through their modules? Why or
why not?
3. In your own experience, are parents keen on teaching their children under the
new normal education?
4. In your own opinion, do you think this school year will be a success at the end?
Directions: Read each editorial carefully and identify thetypeof editorial being presented
in the articles.
Philippine Recording Star Christian Bautista forgot to sing the two lines of the
lyrics of “LupangHinirang” when he sang the national anthem during the boxing
exhibition between Gerry Peñalosa and Conception Bernabe in Alabang, recently.
Hundreds of boxing fans expressed disappointment about the public
performance of Bautista, who was expected to sing the anthem professionally.
Bautista offered an apology to the public after the incident saying “ I apologize
to the Filipino people for the lapse of memory that occurred during my rendition of the
national anthem.” He promised to sing the national anthem with mastery next time.

2. Education : Weapon
Cherry Luz Mangmang
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the
world.
The Department of Education ensures all children will be given equal opportunity
when it comes to education. Education For All (EFA) has been launched. It aims to
provide quality basic education for the children.
Together, let us claim our right to education. It is the only weapon we can use
to end up poverty.
We, as students should grab the opportunity for what our government has
given to us. Let us always remember that education can improve our lives.

"Public charter schools belong to the public schooling system. It means that
they follow the accepted teaching standards.
These institutions must demonstrate the effectiveness of their established
methods. Otherwise, public charter schools risk being closing for inability to present

It is the responsibility of local staff to educate the students in accordance with
all standards of American school system."

Before K to 12 became a law in 2013, Philippines was one of the last three
countries in the world that still implement a ten-year basic education program. With
this, students finish high school at an average age of 16. This age is not yet
employable. Aside from that, students didn’t have mastered or specialized skill that
was useful for job-seeking. For those who pursued college education, some found
6
themselves in a course that mismatched their interest making them demotivated
despite the expensive school fees.
These, we cannot bear to see in the next years to come.
K to 12 is the answer to these problems. Let us take a clearer look into the
system in which K to 12 will help our current condition. In K to 12 curriculum, the 10
year- basic education program will be added with two more years which will be called
the Senior High School. From the average graduating age which is 16, students will
now graduate at the average age of 18. By this time, they will be legally employed
and/or start their own business.
With the Senior High School program, students will be molded into skillful
graduates who are ‘real world’ ready. SHS program offers different career paths that
suit students’ inclination. Aside from employability, SHS program prepares graduates
for a more complex level of academic demands in college if they proceed to higher
degree of education making our college students and college education at par with
international standards.
All these will not come to us on a silver platter. For sure, there will
oppositions, insufficiency, shortage, crisis and other adversaries. They will not test
our readiness for K to 12 implementations; rather, they will measure our willingness
to step into a dark tunnel of challenges hoping to see the light of national growth at
the end of it.
That being said, K to 12 gives us hope for a brighter future. But that does not mean
that everything will be smooth sailing. There is never an easy change, yet the result
that K to 12 promises is never far from becoming a reality.

"TV shows categorized as reality make people lose the sense of reality.
Directors force the audience to believe that all challenges tackled by the players
every day take place in real life, and the consequences are sometimes adverse.
Studies by Dr. Gibson from Michigan University prove excessive viewing of
TV shows belonging to this category result into a higher level of aggression among
the general population of the United States.
These shows should have different rankings to prevent adolescents from
watching them."
