DEIXIS IN THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES MOVIE SCRIPT

Abstract:

Pragmatics is the study of the relationship between language and context that forms the basis of
determining understanding of Levinson 1983: 21). Levinson also adds that pragmatics includes
discussion of presuppositions, speech acts, aspects of discourse structure and deixis This study
was entitled “An Analysis of deixis in The spider wick chronicles script”. The problems of this
study were what types of deixis are used in the spider wick chronicles script, and what is the
dominant deixis used in The Spider wick Chronicles movie script. The objectives of this study
were to find the types of deixis and to find the dominant of deixis in The spider wick Chronicles
movie script. This study only focused on movie script. This study was purposed to find out the
types and the dominant of deixis are used in The spider wick chronicles script. The script was get
from internet. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The following steps, it applied
was the first, this study looked for the movie, the second, this study watched the movie, then,
looked for the movie script of the movie “The spider wick chronicles”, the fourth, this study
identified the sentence of the movie script based on four types of deixis. From the analysis, it is
found that there are four types : personal deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, and discourse
deixis and the most dominant deixis used in The Spider wick Chronicles Movie Script.

INTRODUCTION

Language is used as a media of communication. By language every people can transfer what we
mean to other people.In the English language study there was five main components of micro
linguistics,such as phonology,morphology,syntax,semantic and pragmatic.Pragmatic is the
studies that explained the way in which context contributes to meaning. As Horn and Ward
(2006) underlined that Pragmatics is the study of the context-dependent aspects of meaning
which are systematically abstracted away from in the construction of logical form. It
means that pragmatics is a branch of linguistics that focuses on using of language and its

meaning from the expressions and utterances through deixis, speech act, sense,
reference and its meaning.

Based on Levinson (1983), deixis is distinguished into several types, each has different meaning
and reference. They are; person, time, place, and discourse. Deixis can be found in a short
story,novel and movie. This study analyzed a movie entitled the spiderwick chronicles.There
were many dialogues and monologues in this movie that can be found and analyzed for finding
out the deixis.

From the explanation above, it can be conluded that deixis is the study of the language which is
related how to analyze words or phrases,that are related about people,time,place,social and
discourse. This relates to cues in various aspects of the language where speech and the
relationship between language and context structures are being used. Deixis is also studies how
to encode the speech or speech context with grammatically system.And how to interpret speech
depends on the context analysis.

1. Types of Deixis

In this researcher analyzed deixis in pragmatics. There are so many categories of deixis but in
this research, researcher focus on analyzed person deixis, place deixis, time deixis and deixis
discourse in assalamualaikum beijing movie script. There are many characters in
assalamualaikum beijing movie but in this research will focus to find out kinds of deixis on
assalamualaikum beijing script as the main character related on the pragmatic field

a.Person Deixis

According to Levinson (1983) Personal deixis concerns the encoding of the role of
participants in the speech event, in which the utterance in the question delivered. Personal
deixis is related directly in the grammatical categories of person. In simple word, personal
deixis has a function to indicate person.

According to Horn (2006:112) in Saputri (2016) Personal deixis consists of speaker

(person does the action or speak in the conversation), addressee (the person hears or
reply the conversation), and other person in the conversation. So when people speak in the
utterances, they are some position as speaker, addressee, and others (third person).

The researcher found 3 kinds of personal deixis from another source, they are first,second ,and
third personal deixis. Here is the explanation about the types of personal deixis :

First person (I). The first person deixis is a reference that refers to the speaker or both speaker
and referent grouped with the speaker which is expressed in singular pronouns, like (I, me,
myself, mine) and plural pronouns (we, us, ourselves, our, ours).

Second person (you). The second person deixis is a deictic reference to a person or persons
identified as addressee, such as you, yourself, yourselves, your, yours. In other word, second
person deixis is a person who takes direct contact with the first person and being a listener.

Third person (He, She, It, They). Third person deixisis a deictic reference as the speaker
or addressee and usually imply to the gender that the utterance refers to. It includes
pronoun he, she, and they, him, himself, her, herself, it, their. Third person deixis also
can be said as a person who is being talked between first person and second person.

b.Place Deixis

According to Thomas (1995:9), place deixis such as here, there, this, that, are only when you
know where the speaker is standing or what the speaker is indicating that they become truly
meaningful. The function of spatial deixis is to indicate place.

Grundy (2000:28) adds that there are three degrees of proximity by no means uncommon with

some language distinguishing proximity to the speaker and to the address. They are
"here" (proximity), "there" (distal), and where ( the archaic hither, hence, thither, thence,
wither, whence) left, right, up, down, above, below,in front, behind, come go, bring, take.

Briefly this place deixis mean is an experession used to show the location relative to the location
of the participants in this speech event.

c.Time Deixis

Time deixis is s another category of deictic expressions. It refers to an event of an

utterance, which takes place anytime relative to the speaking time and is, therefore,
represented by tense,time adverbials and sometimes by spatial prepositions.

According to Levinson (1985:62) It means that time deixis is references that used to
state the time when the utterance is uttered.

Furthermore, Thomas (1995:9) said that time deixis, such as yesterday, tomorrow, now,
only become fully meaningful if you know when the words were uttered. The function of
temporal deixis is to indicate time.

d. Discourse Deixis

Discourse deixis also known as text deixis. Discourse deixis is an expression in which
the reference is within in the discourse or text. Discourse deixis also an expression used to
refer to certain discourse that contain the utterance or as a signal and its relations to
surrounding text, (Levinson, 1983:85). Briefly discourse deixis is a deitic reference to a portion
of a discourse relative to the speaker’s current location in the discourse.

2.Movie

Movie is a tool to convey various messages to the general public through storytelling. Movie is
also interpreted as a medium of artistic expression for artists and film people to express their
ideas and the story.This is supported by Michael Rabbiger (2009:8) Every Movie is interesting
and entertaining, and makes the audience think about the lesson in the movie. Every existing
work in movie is unique and interesting so there are many ways that can be used in a
documentary to convey ideas about the real world.

The Spider wick Chronicles is a 2008 American fantasy adventure film based on the bestselling
book series of the same name by Holly Black and Tony Di Terlizzi. It was directed by Mark
Waters and stars Freddie Highmore, Sarah Bolger, Mary-Louise Parker, Martin Short, Nick
Nolte, and Seth Rogen. Set in the Spider wick Estate in New England, it follows the adventures
of Jared Grace and his family as they discover a field guide to fairies while battling goblins,
ogres, brownies, boggarts, hobgoblins, trolls and other magical creatures.

METHOD

Research design that used in this study was descriptive qualitative method. This Research was
carried out by collecting the data, analyzing the data and presented the result of data analysis. In
collecting data, the researchers used video and script from the internet. Then, the documentation
was used for collect the data by gathering all kinds of documents related to deixis subject. The
analysis started by knowing the kind of deixis then elaborated them using the theories used in
this present study. Next, the data were classified based on their types by underlining the
utterances of the characters analyzed.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

Results

Based on the findings, there are four types of deixis in the spider wick chronicles movie script.
They are personal, place or spatial deixis , time, and discourse deixis. The data is summarized in
the table below:

Discussion

After the researcher analyzed the types of deixis in The spider wick chronicles on the script, we
are get 4 types of deixis, such as person deixis, place or spatial deixis, time deixis and discourse
deixis.

Based on analyzed the researcher found person deixis, It was divided by 3 parts there are first
person deixis, consists of singular pronoun like (I,myself,me,mine),and plural pronoun like
(we,us,ourselves),and the last is third person deixis like (she,him,her).

The second is a place deixis concerned where the dialogue was happened. It relates to Levinson
(1983:62) “place deixis concerns with the encoding of spatial location relative to the location of
the participants in the speech event. Probably, most language grammaticalize at least a
distinction between proximal (or close to speaker) and distal (or non-proximal, sometimes close
to address), but it was much more elaborate distinctions of what we shall looking for. Such
distinctions are commonly encoded in demonstratives (as in English this vs that) and in deictic
adverbs of place (like here, there)”. Place deixis or spatial deixis show location, place utterance
in the movie.

In the spiderwick chronicles movie script the dialogue place deixis there was: here,there,this
place,a room. The third kinds of deixis is time deixis, is was concerned when to the time
at which an utterance is spoken. Used a grammatical adverb of time now, then, tomorrow,
yesterday, morning. In this movie script the researcher found 2 time deixis, there are : tomorrow
and now.

In addition to Levinson (1983:217) time deixis refers to the time which relative to the time of
speaking or an utterance spoken. Discourse deixis is a show some expression utterance in
the dialogue. According to Levinson (1983:85) “Discourse or text deixis concerns the use of
expressions within some utterance to refer to some portion of the discourse that contains that the
utterance (including the utterance itself). In this research the discourse deixis was found 2 there
are : This and it. Refers to utterance something that the speaker say.

CONCLUSION

The types of deixis that used in “the spiderwick chronicles” movie script were personal deixis,
spatial deixis, temporal deixis and discourse deixis. In the spiderwick chronicles movie script,
there was 17 personal deixis. there is first person deixis (7 words), second person deixis (6
words), third person deixis (4 words). Personal deixis is a deixis that used to the person who
spoke in the utterances. Also, there was 3 place deixis . It is used in where the speaker or
address spoke in the utterances. In the spiderwick chronicles movie script, there was 2-time
deixis. It is used in when speaker or addressee spoke in the utterance, and there was 3
discourse deixis. From the explanation of deixis above, we know personal deixis especially first
person deixis is the most dominant in "the spiderwick chronicles " movie script.

For the pragmatic learners, students can use this research as the references in studying
pragmatics especially in deixis expression and determining types of deixis, then the students can
apply it,for communicate in their social life or in their daily activities.This research can be used
by teachers as a pragmatic learning material in the classroom especially on deixis material, for
increasing student interest and enthusiasm of student in learning ,so the teacher can using several
media like movie or video for learning ,and the student will getting interested to learn it. This
research still needs improvement in some parts, for further researchers who want to do research
in the same field, this research can used it as a guide for give information and for getting better
result of research.
