History:

He came to the Philippines at age 12 from Fujian, China

He began selling imported American shoes after his father's stores burned down at the end of World
War 2

He opened Shoe Mart, which sold shoes and other related products

His shoe store eventually branched out into a chain of department stores.

He opened SM Mall of Asia, which is considered the largest mall in the world

He also ventured into leisure, hospitality, real estate, and banking.

She has husband names Rodrigo


At the start of her venture in business, she and her husband constantly moved back and forth from
Cebu, Leyte, and Bohol

History:

She was a working student in college but stopped when she got married.

She was exposed to general management and human resources when she and her husband worked in
his family's sugarcane plantation

She tried various jobs like putting up a sari-sari store, having a sewing business, and being a canteen
concessionaire.

As she was running 3 canteens, one baker advised her to set up her own bakery and offered to be her
baker.

The first branch of Julie's bakeshop was then opened when she was 50 years old which grew and
branched out to various places in Cebu.

3. Jane Manansala

founder of Orient Sports Gear

her hometown was in Mariveles, Bataan

she once worked as a factory worker, quit her job and tried to raise hogs

History:

She saw the opportunity to produce clothing, since her town in Mariveles was the country's first Export
Processing Zone

She bought a sewing machine with a start-up capital of Php 11, 000

She used discarded cloth from garment manufacturers and excess threads from factories.
Later on, she started producing bags and hired expert sewers.

Her husband joined her as her business grew and became in charge of trimming and cuttinf, deliveries,
and maintenance if the machines

Her business gained exposure because representatives from DTO invited them to join fairs

SHe is unfazed by competitors becayse she feels that demand for bags is high

4. Marx Melencio

lost his eyesight at age of 30 when a drunken man fired a gun to his face twice

studied at ATRIEV, a special school for blind people that teaches them how to use a computer

joined an employment training program at the Resources for the Blind

He had the idea to start his own business using his knowledhe of computers and writing skills

He started his business which provides research services to offshore software companies

He currently employs 100 skilled workers which includes people who have disabilities

He then expaneded his services to include web programming, phone and e-mail support, telemarketing,
and customer support

Recently, his business landed a long-term contract with a software company


He continues to mentor others, share his skills and employs/trains PWDs

5. Alvin Ong

founder/owner of Burger Company which opened in 201

started and ventured into various businesses like the Red Panda Express, Tusok-Tusok Express, Panda

History:

He combined his passion in culinary arts and doing business in his business venture.

He enrolled himself and studied at various schools which includes Center for Culinary ARts Manila, Asian
Institure of Management, Entrepreneurs School of Asia

His experience in culinary arts allowed him to see an opportunity to put up businesses,

He had a lot of struggles coming up and managing these businesses but it eventually led him to his
current venture which is Burger Company

He is currently enjoying his restaurant business and looks forward to growing it through socil media,
blogs, and celebrity endorsers.
