In Class Assignment 2 Spring2021

This document contains an in-class assignment with 6 questions related to probability, random signals, and statistics. Question 1 asks to find the minimum annual profit for a store to have a reward party given a normal distribution of profits. Question 2 asks to calculate a residual given a least squares regression line predicting distance from car age. Question 3 asks to find the equation of a least squares regression line predicting electric vehicle share from incentive actions. Question 4 asks to calculate a proportion given a normal distribution of temperatures. Question 5 asks to estimate a percentile given a stem plot of student travel distances. Question 6 asks to calculate an area under a density curve where x is less than 3.

1. The distribution of annual profit at a chain of stores was approximately normal with
mean µ = $66,000 and standard deviation σ = $22,000 The stores with profits in the
top 5%, percent each had a reward party for the employees to celebrate. What is
closest to the minimum annual profit for a store that had a reward party? [4]
2. Joe sells used cars. He recorded the age (in years) of each car on his lot along with
the number of kilometers it had been driven. After plotting his results, Joe noticed
that the relationship between the two variables was fairly linear, so he used the data
to calculate the following least squares regression equation for predicting distance driven
from the age of the car:
yˆ = 11,000 + 18,000x
What is the residual of a car that is 2 years old and has been driven 50,000 km? [2]
3. An environmental activist wants to look at the relationship between number of incen-
tive actions taken by the government and the percent share that electric cars make
up of overall new vehicle sale in several metropolitan areas. The data show a linear
pattern with the summary statistics shown below in Figure 1. Find the equation of the
least-squares regression line for predicting the electrical vehicle share of new vehicle
sales from the number of incentive actions the government takes.

4. A set of average city temperatures in September are normally distributed with a

mean of 21◦C and a standard deviation of 2◦C What proportion of temperatures are
between 17◦C and 23◦C? [3]
5. The stem plot in the Figurre 2 gives the distances, in kilometers, that 30 students
travel to school. Here the key is Key: 7 9| = 7.97 kilometers. Calculate the closest
estimate to the percentile for the students who travel 35 km to the school. [3]
