MD1 C Plate 1 Feb 2021

The document contains 5 problems related to mechanics of materials and machine design. Problem 1 involves determining forces on bolts and pins of a bolt cutter. Problem 2 involves drawing shear and moment diagrams and computing stresses for a loaded beam. Problem 3 involves finding forces on members and reactions for a loaded assembly with pins and cables. Problem 4 involves sizing a solid and hollow shaft to transmit power within stress and twisting limits. Problem 5 involves determining torques, stresses, belt lengths, and bending moments for a belted transmission system.

MACHINE DESIGN 1 (DRAFTING)

Plate No. 1
REVIEW OF KINEMATICS AND MECHANICS OF MATERIALS

1. The figure depicts a schematic drawing of a bolt cutter, a pin-connected tool

in the closed position in the process of gripping its jaws into a bolt. The user
provides the input loads between the handles, indicated as the reaction pairs
P. Determine the force exerted on the bolt and the pins at joints A, B, and
C. Use the following data: P = 2 lb; a =1 in. : b = 3in.; c = ½ in.: d = 8in.:
e = 1in.

2. A beam with the given cross-sectional

dimensions is loaded as shown. (a) Draw the
shear and moment diagrams for the beam.
(b) Compute for the maximum bending and
shear stresses.

3. The assembly shown in Figure 1.3a, which carries a load of 30 kN, consists of two beams
ABCD and CEF, and one bar BE, connected by pins; it is supported by a pin at A and a cable
DG. The dimensions are in meters. Find (a) The components of the forces acting on each
member and (b) The axial force, shear force, and moment acting on the cross section at point
G. Assumptions: Friction forces in the pin joints will be omitted. All forces are coplanar and
2D.

4. A power of one thousand two hundred kilowatts is to be transmitted at 800 rpm by means of a steel shaft without exceeding a
torsional stress of 90 MPa or twisting through more than 1o in a length of 20 diameters. Determine the following:
a. diameter of solid shaft required
b. If Di = 0.5 Do, what hollow shaft diameters are required?
c. Which is lighter from a) and b), and by what percentage? Consider equal length and same material.

5. A belted transmission system is loaded as shown. The input shaft takes its power from a 50 kW motor that runs at 1200 rpm.
The output shaft drives a certain machinery equipment. Determine the following:
a. torque available at each of shafts A, B, and C.
b. torsional stress induced on the 50mm diameter output shaft
c. length of belt required to connect each pair of pulleys
d. maximum bending moment on shaft B, considering a belt coefficient of friction of 0.25.
