Pspice Simulation of Mosfet Amplifier Configurations: 2.1 Objective

1. The document describes a PSPICE simulation of common source MOSFET amplifier configurations, including the design of a common source amplifier, and modifications for current-series and voltage-series feedback. 2. Tables with results from transient and frequency response analyses are presented, showing voltage gains around 3.14e+001dB and 1.66e+001dB respectively for the common source amplifier with current-series and voltage-series feedback. 3. The bandwidths were observed to be 90kHz for the current-series feedback configuration and 112kHz for the voltage-series feedback configuration.

2.3 BACKGROUND
SPICE is software that simulates electronic circuits. SPICE can perform various
analyses such as DC analysis, Transient analysis, AC analysis and operating point
measurements. SPICE contains model for common circuit elements active as well as passive
and it is possible of simulating most electronic circuits. The abbreviation of SPICE is
Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis.

2.4 THEORY
A common-source amplifier is one of three basic single-stage field-effecttransistor
(FET) amplifier topologies, typically used as a voltage ortransconductance amplifier.As a
transconductance amplifier, the input voltage is seen as modulating the current going to the
load. As a voltage amplifier, input voltage modulates the amount of current flowing through
the FET, changing the voltage across the output resistance according to Ohm's law.However,
the FET device's output resistance typically is not high enough for a reasonable
transconductance amplifier (ideally infinite), nor low enough for a
decentvoltageamplifier(ideallyzero).Anothermajordrawbackistheamplifier'slimitedhigh-
frequency response. Therefore, in practice the output often is routed through either a voltage
follower (common-drain or CD stage), or a current follower (common-gate or CG stage), to
obtain more favorable output and frequency characteristics.

If RD =Rs , then RD=Rs= 15k .

The drain current expression for the MOSFET operating in the saturation region is given by
ID= Kn(Vgs-Vth)2

from which , VGS=√ +1 =√ +1=1.23V

Using KVL around the gate-source loop ,

VG=VGS +IDRS = 1.23 +(0.33m X 15k) =6.2V
Also, VG can be expressed by voltage divider rule as

VG=VDDX
1+ 2

from which = -1 = 15 -1 =1.42 V

Let R2=1M
∴ R1= R2 X 1.42 = 1.42M

2.6 PROCEDURE
1. Open Capture LiteEdition.
2. Go to the File menu and select New Project. Select Analog or MixedA/D
3. Create a blank project and then clickOK.
4. Select ‘Place’ option from tool bar. Pick and place all the required circuit
components by just clicking on the elements.
5. Connect the components as per circuit diagram using ‘place wire’ button that
is available in toolbar.
6. Click on each components to give the parameter values as per design.Save the
schematic.
7. Create a new simulation profile. Mention the type of analysis and simulate thecircuit.
8. Measure the voltages and currents at different points and tabulate thereadings.
