Preparing for and Taking the Foundation Exam

There are three APMP accreditation levels: Foundation, Practitioner, and Professional --
and you must earn them in that order. For details about the APMP Accreditation
Program, including the experience requirement and the fee for each accreditation level,
please see Accreditation Program Overview and Accreditation Fees.

The Foundation exam is a multiple choice, pass-fail, and open book exam with 75
questions -- you must get 42 correct answers to pass. Once you start the exam, you have
one hour to finish it.

There are several ways you can approach preparing for the Foundation exam. Your
decision depends on your level of experience, knowledge of best practices, and previous
training courses. If you have more questions about this give me a call and I will help you
evaluate your options.

1. Take a Foundation Course

Face to face Foundation Level training and exam sessions are offered by APMP
Approved Training Organizations (ATOs). Monitor the APMP Community Calendar for
scheduled sessions.

The table below all the ATOs and their website for additional information.

ATO Name On-Line Webinars Face to Face Classroom Website

Bid to Win Yes Yes www.bid-to-win.eu
CSK Management Yes Yes www.cskmanagement.com

Shipley Associates Yes Yes www.shipleywins.com
Shipley UK Yes www.shipleywins.co.uk

The Foundation Level exam fee does not include payment for accreditation training.
ATO training to prepare for the Foundation level exam runs about $195 to $500 per
person depending on vendor and media used for training.

2. Study on Your Own

Attending training and exam sessions conducted by ATOs is not the only way to earn
Foundation Level accreditation. You can study on your own and then take the exam on-
line (see http://www.apmg-exams.com/UKPstartF.asp) via the APM Group, a UK
organization that administers the accreditation exam and assessment processes for the
APMP.

To prepare for the exam on your own, I recommend the following.

 The APMP Accreditation Proposal Guide is the primary accreditation study guide for
Foundation Level accreditation. The guide provides the answers to all the questions
tested in the Foundation exam. It is available through the APMP Store
Preparing for and Taking the Foundation Exam
(https://apmp.site-ym.com/store/view_product.asp?id=1018152).
Purchase price is $59 for APMP members, $119 for nonmembers. This does not
include shipping. Shipping charges are selected at checkout. This guide is an APMP
branded version of the Shipley Proposal Guide 3rd edition. Delivery is 3 to 5 days, but
due to local delivery circumstances, international shipping can vary.
 Use the e-learning and periodic webinars listed from ATO’s listed below to prepare
for the on-line exam.
 APMP’s Accreditation Syllabus indicates the Foundation Level competencies that
you should study in The Proposal Guide. The APMP doesn't provide a cross-
reference between the competencies and where they are addressed in the Proposal
Guide.
 APMP Accreditation Glossary provides a glossary of terms used in Foundation level
exam.
 Take a seven-question sample exam available on-line (see http://www.apmg-
exams.com/UKPstartF.asp). This sample is indicative of the format and context of
the questions. Since it’s short, it may not be a true test of one's ability to pass the real
exam.

3. Use On-line Training

ATOs offer online training in the form of e-learning or periodic scheduled webinars.
The e-learning options are available anytime. The periodic webinars are usually
taught one session per week over 4 weeks.

Monitor the APMP Community Calendar for scheduled webinar sessions. The e-
learning course is always available. There is a separate fee for online training. Once
you have competed your training and are satisfied with your knowledge, you can
then arrange to pay for and take the online Foundation Level exam on your own as
discussed under Study on Your Own above.
