I have to be honest: I don’t like my mother-in-law very much. It’s not that I abhor
her or anything, it’s just that she’s so anxious all the time, it’s a little hard to
deal with. It’s always a daunting task whenever she comes over to dinner. No
matter what I cook, we have to allay all of her fears about the food before
she’ll take a single bite. And it’s pretty hard to pacify her once she gets excited.
One time, when I cooked rabbit stew, she got so worked up that she told me
that cooking rabbit was reprehensible, that you should only cook feral animals.
I asked her if she considered a cow to be a feral animal, but she wouldn’t
answer me. Instead she ate nothing and remained taciturn for the rest of the
dinner. Her visits are so exhausting and enervating!
