Jaya Engineeering College-Thiruninravur 602024 4 Semester B.E/B.TECH Internal Assesment (Unit Test)

1. The document is an internal assessment test for an Aerodynamics course covering topics like the Karman-Tsien rule, boundary layers, laminar and turbulent flow, and boundary layer equations. 2. It contains three parts - short answer questions worth 2 marks each, a 8 mark question involving boundary layer parameters, and two 16 mark questions about deriving the Blasius equation and boundary layer separation or calculating boundary layer properties. 3. The test aims to assess students' understanding of fundamental aerodynamic concepts through analytical questions and calculations involving boundary layers.

INTERNAL ASSESMENT (UNIT TEST)
Sub Title: AERODYNAMICS-I Date: 19/03/2018 (AN)
Sub Code:AE 6401 Branch: Aeronautical
Duration: 90 minutes Max Marks: 50

Part A – (10x2= 20) Answer all the question

1.Write Karman –tsien rule for compressibility corrections.

2.Define critical Reynolds number.
3.Distinguish between laminar turbulent flow .
4.How is the flow over a circular cylinder different from flow over a flat plate if the fluid is viscous?
5.Define boundary layer and its development.

Part B – (1x8 = 8)

6. (a)For the given velocity profile as (u/U)=2n-n2 where n=(y/δ).Determine the displacement
thickness, momentum thickness, energy and shape factor. Where δ is boundary layer thickness (8)

Part C – (2x16 = 80)

7.(a)(i)Derive blasius equation for an incompressible flow over a flat plate. (10)
(ii) What is meant by separation of boundary layer. With a neat sketch, illustrate such flow over an
airfoil and convex surface. (6)
(Or)

(b) Consider a flow over a small plate which is 8cm long in the flow direction and 1 m wide. The
free stream condition correspond to standard sea level, and the flow velocity is 120m/s. Assuming
laminar flow,Calculate the boundary layer thickness at the downstream edge and drag force on the
plate. For the same flow over the same plate, assume that the boundary layer is now completely
turbulent. Calculate the boundary layer thickness at the trailing edge and the drag force on the plate.
(16)

8. (a) From the Navier-Stokes equation establish the 2-dimentional boundary layer equations.(16)

(Or)

(b) Air moves(u) at 60kmph uniformly towards a flat plate at zero angle of attack. Calculate the
(i)Boundary layer thickness (δ)
(ii) Displacement thickness (θ)
(iii) Momentum thickness at a section 22cm from the leading ledge of a flate plate. Assume the
velocity profile in the boundary layer in the form u=U[1.5y / δ -0.5(y/δ)3].
