Chapter 1 of Ifeyiwa
The arrival of Christianity in Nigeria since late twentieth century, brought about unprecedented
development to the Eastern region. It developed the Igbo nation in various ways, some of which
involved religious, economic and political areas. Nnobi, a town in Idemili south local government area of
Nnobi state is not far from this development. She enjoyed a great deal of interaction with the white
missionaries that arrived in the early 1900s. The white missionaries came from Asaba, Onitsha and
Owerri respectively. The Anglicans were the first to arrive Nnobi, with the help of Ajayi Crowder who
sent the from Onitsha. The Anglicans preached the gospel and were able to interact with the natives but
we're not able to convert them, due to their strong hold of their native religious beliefs and practices
that they took very seriously. It even got to the point that they only allowed their slaves to attend the
prayer gatherings created by the Anglicans. The only reason for their partial acceptance was because,
Nnobi was already trading with the Europeans as far back as late19th century. So it was easy to preach
to them but it was not easy to convert them into full Christian faith. Some scholars are of the opinion
that the fact that it was people of the same skin color that preached the gospel to the ozo title and icihe
holders made it look unserious and took a less effective approach that was able to win their hearts. It
wasn't long after that the Roman Catholic missions of the Holy Ghost fathers of Ireland and France took
the whole Nnobi by storm and applied what they used in every other part of Igbo land to get massive
conversation to Christianity. It wasn't an easy task especially with a place like Nnobi which was very
grounded with the worship of the river goddess of Idemili as well as other smaller deities. The
movement of most Nnobi citizens to Christianity are classified under three stages namely; Pre colonial
era, colonial era and post colonial era. These three era's saw the development of Christianity in Nnobi
and made her to earn the title "Nnobi Ana NSO". This research, aims to look at the different forms of
religious development brought by Christianity and how it affects Nnobi as a nation and as a people.
Religion in Nnobi is a vast spectrum of activities that streamlined into two categories namely
Christianity and traditional practice. It is notable that Christianity paved the way for development and
growth in the community but it has not been able to bask in it's achievement as a well established
religion in the region due to the people's constant cross religious practices. Therefore taking the
community back to the dark ages. Although Christianity is widely practiced in Nnobi but the some of
people still practice and believe in the old way of doing things which involved the visit of Oracles and
diviners such as eze wayi, and dibia. This continues to hamper the growth and development of
Christianity in the community. Some other problems are associated with the custodians of the shrines
and places of worship, who go around spreading and advertising their achievement on radio and print
media's to people of Nnobi who would always see them as a quick means for solving their problems due
to their already established notion of the powers of the old religion. The dibias and eze wayis go about
telling those who care to listen that the white missionaries decieved them with their religion and forced
some of their customs out by radical evangelism, hence making the people to abandon their ways. Some
of which have now gone back to their old ways of religion and brought back social vises like kidnapping,
theft and fetish rivalry. These factors amongst others have taking back Nnobi years backwards from
where it was by the arrival of Christianity to where it is now. Christianity in Nnobi also have taking a
huge turn in rivalry, especially with the inter rivalry between the different denominations and the
dominance of the Roman Catholic church in the community. The rivalry between the Roman Catholic
Church and other denominations saw a huge rise in fetish practices cause most of those that practice it
are active members of the church. Some of the propergators of the rivalry between the different
churches in Nnobi are still the same people that carry out traditional practices.
The purpose of this research is to identify the socio religious impacts of Christianity to Nnobi, and how
it has shaped the community. The impacts are classified under three stages namely; pre colonial,
colonial and post colonial era.
