METHODS OF RESEARCH WITH STATISTICS MAED ENGLISH

CASE SCENARIO 1:
“A survey on the Prevalence of Bullying among Secondary School Students”

1. Who should we obtain the consent? Students, parents, teachers, or Department of

Education? Why, support your answer. What are the guidelines in informed consent
related to the educational research?

-We should obtain consent from all of these people by sequence—from higher authority
to the lowest—Department of Education, Teachers, and Students. First, ask permission to
DepEd so that they are aware that you are working on research on this particular schools,
followed by teachers so that they can help you to distribute your questionnaire/survey forms to
the students, and lastly, to the students so that they are fully informed about the procedures and
risks involved in the research. Their consent to participate must be secured.
According to University Oxford Research Support, Informed consent intent that human
participants can enter research freely (voluntarily) with full information about what it means for
them to take part, and that they give consent before they enter the research.
Consent should be obtained before the participant enters the research (prospectively). The
minimum requirements for consent to be informed are that the participant understands what the
research is and what they are consenting to.
There are two distinct stages to a standard consent process for competent adults:

 Stage 1 (giving information): the person reflects on the information given; they are under
no pressure to respond to the researcher immediately.

 Stage 2 (obtaining consent): the researcher reiterates the terms of the research, often as
separate bullet points or clauses; the person agrees to each term (giving explicit
consent) before agreeing to take part in the project as a whole. Consent has been
obtained.
2. If the results show that 50% of the students have ever been bullied, should I report
them to the police? Who should have an access to the result of the study conducted
based on the ethical issues of research?

- I should go directly to the higher authority related to this matter (Department of

Education) especially to the persons that are significantly to this research such as the school,
teachers, stakeholders. So that they will look into recommending solutions to the problem.
Findings should be reported with complete honesty.

3. I have decided to publish it. What are the guidelines in publishing a research related to
ethical issues in research?

- Firstly, you should write the manuscript according to the Authors instructions of the
target journal. Make sure that your manuscript agrees with the aim and scope of the journal.
Avoid predatory journals.
