Patterns and Irregularities

The document discusses the value and applications of mathematics. It notes that mathematics is not just about numbers and formulas, but also about patterns found in nature and our surroundings. The author learned that mathematics has a wide scope and is interesting when focused on with understanding. Studying examples like the Fibonacci sequence in flowers increased the author's curiosity and interest in math. Most importantly, mathematics is very useful for humankind as it helps develop organized and systematic thinking that can be applied to problem-solving and decision-making in life, and math principles are all around us in nature.

PATTERNS IN NATURE AND REGUALRITIES IN THE WORLD

1. What new ideas about math did you learn?

Most people that I know doesn’t really like Math, even I don’t like math, or
maybe Math doesn’t like us. It is really a traumatizing subject for me, I have been
in a lot of situation where I was asked to answer the problem on the board but I
couldn’t because I don’t understand it and I always end up embarrassing myself.
I’ve learned that Math is not purely formulas and problems. It is also about
comprehension and our surroundings. I learned that math has a really wide
scope and it does not just focus on numbers. It is also fun when we really try to
focus and it makes us feel fulfilled when we understand how the formulas work.
The materials that was given to us was really helpful, for me. It served us
an introduction to the subject and also the lesson last time was really enjoyable
and I somehow managed to understand the formula and answered most of the
questions correctly, although I had a hard time grasping it in the beginning. I was
really happy about it because I never thought that I could fully understand it.

2. What is it about math that might have changed your thought about it?
A lot of people, including myself who is not that fond of Math, must’ve
shaped the idea of the subject, wrongly. We always thought of it as a really
tiresome and hard subject, and that must’ve been the reason why we don’t like
Math. We are not open to new ideas, that is why we are stuck with the idea that
Math is all about computation and numbers. What we don’t know is that
Mathematics is way more than formulas and numbers.
After reading the materials given, I’ve realized that math is an interesting
subject. I never knew that the petals in flowers have something to do with the
Fibonacci sequence. It made me really curious and interested. Also, the
discussion in Math last time, was really fun. The patterns and numbers that we
need to analyze captivated me and it was really nerve wracking, it makes us
think of possibilities.
Little by little, I think that I will be able to understand and cope with the
complicated side of Math and I can only hope that I will survive and keep up with
the topics, because this is only the beginning.

3. What is the most useful about mathematics for humankind?

I always question why we need to study math every year in school; I

always think that it is enough already as long as we know how to add, subtract,
multiply and divide and I think that some people have the same thinking as mine.
But I, am wrong.

Math is really helpful in our everyday lives, not just in buying something or
calculating but in life itself. If we think mathematically, we will learn how to be
organized like in formulas. We will know how to systematically fix our problems or
issues in life and we will be able to think it through and make good decisions.
Also, we may not know it but Math is everywhere, the waves in the ocean that
makes us calm, the pattern that it makes, there is math in it. The beautiful flowers
that we see every day and the spiraling shells of snails, try to observe it and you
will find the Fibonacci sequence.

We may not notice it but if we put genuine interest in Math, we will

observe that math is really all around us, especially in nature.
