In today’s dynamic world, Industrial Engineering plays a vital role in the performance of an
organization. It is very important that an organization develops the optimized schedule to
satisfy customer demands and at the same time, improve the organization’s efficiency.
Optimization is felicitated by application of ‘Industrial Engineering’ techniques. If an
organization is not aiming at improving/optimizing its current processes, it will result in poor
productivity, thus incurring high costs. Therefore, Industrial Engineering function helps the
organization to obtain a competitive advantage in the market by reducing the costs,
improving the efficiency and productivity, reducing the production lead time, and on the
whole developing a brand image in the market.

This assignment has been framed in order to test the student’s knowledge on the concepts
and applications of industrial engineering

Question 1 (15 Marks)

Productivity improvement forms the core concept of Industrial Engineering. All tools and
techniques of Industrial Engineering are concerned with improvement of productivity at a workplace.
There are numerous ways of measuring the productivity of a workplace. They are selected based on
suitability and relevance for a given application.

With this background, prepare an essay on the following topic:

“Significance of Metrics for productivity improvement of a manufacturing cell”

The essay should address the following aspects:

1.1 Introduction to the topic

1.2 Factors to be considered while selecting metrics for productivity in an organization

1.3 Any three metrics of productivity commonly used at a workplace and their relevance

1.4 Conclusion

Question 2 (15 Marks)

Facility Layout Planning and Design has a significant role to play in the success of the
operations being carried out by the company. Productivity, Quality, Inventory, Employee
Morale, Non value added time, all these aspects are directly or indirectly influenced by the
facility layout design. Hence, it is important to arrive at the optimized layout for the facility
which ensures a smooth flow of the operations and enhanced productivity. With this
background, you are supposed to visit a supermarket and prepare a report on the layout
design in the store. The report should include the following details:

2.1 Brief introduction about the visited supermarket

2.2 Macro layout plan of the supermarket

2.3 Shortcomings observed in the layout plan and suggestions for improvement

2.4 Expected Benefits by implementing the suggestions

Note: Every student has to visit a different supermarket in consultation with the course leader.

Question 3 (20 Marks)

Proper recording of facts, for analyzing and improving any given activity in a workplace, plays
a critical role. Systematic recording of facts is a key aspect of method study, which forms the basis of
carrying out improvements in a workplace. Hence, different types of charts are used by industrial
engineers to simplify the job of recording data so that they get an accurate estimate of how the work
is being carried out currently, and how it can be further improved. In this context, in continuation with
the supermarket visited in Question 2, select any one task being carried out in the supermarket by the

personnel and draw a Two Handed Process chart for the same. The following aspects need to be
addressed:

3.1 Description of the selected task
