Tutorial - Phase Transformations 2 - Solutions

This document discusses phase transformations in two alloy systems. For a 65 wt% Ni-35 wt% Cu alloy, if the α phase composition is 70 wt% Ni, the temperature is within the α+liquid phase field, the liquid phase is ~60 wt% Ni, and the mass fractions of the α and liquid phases are ~55% and ~45% respectively. For a 40 wt% Sn-60 wt% Pb alloy at 150°C, both the α and β phases are present, with the α phase being ~10 wt% Sn-90 wt% Pb and the β phase being ~98 wt% Sn-2 wt% Pb.

Roll Number: Name: SOLUTIONS

Roll Number: Name:

1. A 65 wt% Ni- 35 wt% Cu alloy is heated to a temperature within the α + liquid-phase region. If
the composition of the α phase is 70 wt% Ni, determine:
a. The temperature of the alloy
b. The composition of the liquid phase
c. The mass fractions of both phases
MM152 Tutorial: Phase Transformations 12/02/2013 2
2. For a 40 wt% Sn-60 wt% Pb alloy at 150°C,
a. What are the phases present at this temperature?
b. What are the respective compositions of the phases?

cα c1 cβ

(a) Locate this temperature-composition point on the phase diagram (Point B). Both α and β
phases will coexist

(b) Since two phases are present, we construct a tie line across the α + β phase field at 150°C.
The composition of the α phase, cα ≈ 10 wt% Sn - 90 wt% Pb, the composition of the β phase, cβ
≈ 98 wt% Sn - 2 wt% Pb.
