The falling film evaporator uses gravity to form a thin, uniform film of liquid on the inside of heated tubes. This allows for highly efficient heat transfer which results in low energy consumption and a compact evaporator size. Key components include an evaporator section to heat and evaporate the liquid, a separator to separate the vapor and concentrated liquid, and a condenser to condense the vapor back to liquid. Falling film evaporators are commonly used in pharmaceutical, food, and chemical industries to evaporate liquids like water and organic solvents due to their ability to handle heat-sensitive materials with short residence times and minimal temperature differences.

 The Falling film evaporator is an efficient one-way non-

circulating membrane evaporator.

 Its working principle makes it has the characteristics of
high heat transfer efficiency, low temperature
difference loss, short heating time, non-deterioration,
easy multi-effect operation, low energy consumption
and small equipment volume.
Working Principle
 The liquid is added to the upper tube of the
heating chamber of the falling film evaporator.

 Through the liquid distribution and film forming

device, it is evenly distributed into the heat
exchange tubes. Under the action of gravity and
vacuum induction and air flow, it forms a uniform
film from the top to the bottom. During the flow,
it is heated and vaporized by the shell-side
heating medium.

 The generated Vapor and the liquid phase enter

the separation chamber of the evaporator.

 The vapor-liquid is sufficiently separated, and the

vapor enters the condenser for condensation.
Parts of a Falling Film Evaporator
 Evaporator (the heat exchanger), which is used to heat and evaporate liquid materials.

 Separator, mainly used to separate the concentrated liquid and the secondary vapour generated
after heating.

 Preheater, which is used to preheat liquid materials entering the steam.

 Condenser, whose function is to condense the secondary steam so that it can be recycled and
utilized.

 Condensate tank, which is connected to the pump at the outlet and capable of discharging
condensate liquid automatically.
Applications of Falling Film Evaporators
 Pharmaceutical
 Food
 Chemical
 Other fields for the evaporation and concentration of water and organic
solvents.
Falling Film Evaporators Advantages
 Pipe material flows downward along the inner wall of the pipe by its own gravity,
instead of pushing with the pressure difference.
 Residence time of the raw material in the heat exchanger is very short, does not affect
the chemical properties of heat sensitive materials.
 Material in the heat exchange tube is film state and the flow velocity is fast, so the heat
transfer coefficient is very large.
 No pressure drop, the pipe side material is in the ambient pressure environment which
can save energy.
 Low temperature difference can be chosen because the tube side material is driven
down by its own gravity along the inner wall of the tube rather than by the pressure
difference.
 Very little retention material in tube side.
Falling Film Evaporators Disadvantages
 Necessary to ensure that the inner wall of the heat exchange tube of the equipment is
completely wet but the membrane is not too thick.
 Equipment procurement cost is very high due to high design and manufacturing
requirements
 Falling film evaporators are not applicable to materials that are prone to fouling or
contain solid suspended matter.
 It is not applicable to materials that are easily scaled or containing solid suspension.
