Explain the Pythagorean Theorem, its proofs

and applications.

Ans. In Mathematics, Pythagorean Theorem states that In a

Right angled triangle(where the largest opposite side of a
triangle has a  90°) the square of the Hypotenuse(largest
side of a triangle) is equal to the sum of square of base
and square of the corresponding height. This theorem has
been named after Pythagoras.

Formula:
In triangle ABC,AB is the corresponding height and BC is the
base for it.

Pythagorean Theorem: AB2+BC2= AC2 A

B C
Proof:
Given: A right-angled triangle ABC, right-angled at B.
To Prove: AC2 = AB2 + BC2
Construction: Draw a perpendicular BD meeting AC at D.
A

B C
Proof:
In △ABC and △ADB
∠A = ∠A (common in both triangles)
∠ABC = ∠ADB = 90°
AB = AB
By AA similarity criteria
△ABC ≅ △ ADB
Therefore, AD/AB=AB/AC (corresponding sides of similar
triangles)
Or, AB2 = AD × AC ……..(1)
Also, △BDC ~△ABC
Therefore, CDBC=BCAC (corresponding sides of similar
triangles)
Or, BC2= CD × AC ………………..(2)
Adding the equations (1) and (2) we get,
AB2 + BC2 = AD × AC + CD × AC
AB2 + BC2 = AC (AD + CD)
Since, AD + CD = AC
Therefore, AC2 = AB2 + BC2
Hence, the Pythagorean Theorem is proved.

APPLICATION:
1. Climbing the roof: We use ladders to climb on roof and
often use the Pythagorean Theorem to complete our
climbing. Without even knowing this!! When we put a
ladder, we ensure that it is stable. For that we always
forms a right angled triangle to get a support.
2. To measure the corners of the room: When we want to
measure the room’s corners we use a right angled triangle
scale for measuring height and base or to find out that the
room is perfectly built in a rectangle or a square.
