Style of Leadership in my organization

I believe that the Leadership style has a big influence on the development of an
organization. Each leadership style has its way of affecting the people in an
organization. Some factors that influence us to apply one leadership style is a culture, a
belief, and the environment. It means the place where we stand can determine the
leadership style that we will use. As a result, there are ten theories of leadership that we
need to know deeply. They are great man, trait, skills, style, situational, contingency,
transactional, transformational, leader-member, servant theory of leadership. These
following are short summaries of each leadership theory:
1. Great man theory argued that leaders are born. A person who has the
superhuman ability can be a leader.
2. Trait theory states this approach focuses on the personal attributes (or traits) of
leaders, such as physical and personality characteristics, competencies, and
values. Fleenor (2006) stated that leadership traits are considered to be enduring
characteristics that people are born with and that remain relatively stable over
time.
3. Skills Leadership theory uncovers skills and ability which can make leaders
effective.
4. Skills Leadership theory uncovers skills and ability which can make leaders
effective.
5. The situational theory is about the leader can be good leaders if they can change
their style according to the environment.
6. Contingency theory focuses on the effects of the situation on the success of a
leader.
7. Transactional theory focuses on a result and measure success of organization
then give penalties and rewards based on an organization’s system.
8. Transformational theory focus on transforming others by motivating, inspiring
and supporting each other’s in an organization.
9. Leader member exchange theory focuses on quality of the relationship that built
among the leader and employees.
10. Servant theory is about the leader who serves and the servant who leads also.
After we know about these theories, it will help us to have better understanding in
relating style of leadership which used in an organization. Style of leadership means the
attitude or way of leaders runs their organization.

By observing and meditating the leadership style used in my organization, I

found that its style approach to transformational theory. Gomez (2014) states
“transformational theory can be defined as the process of influencing major changes in
the attitudes, beliefs, and values of followers to a point where the goals of an
organization and the vision of the leader are internalized and followers achieve
performances beyond expectations”. Relating to the education field, the leader should
be able to persuade, inspire, and motivate the colleagues to reach the organization
goals. It means that all parts of the organization need to have a similar understanding,
values that will help to realize the Adventist education itself. Based on my reflection, I
think transformational theory fit to be operated in my organization. Moreover, Nawas &
Khan (2016) states “Inspirational Motivation affords a cradle of encouragement and
challenges followers to achieve the set goals, whereas, Intellectual Stimulation inspires
followers to be more creative and innovative in their problem-solving skills”. It means
that how we motivate and inspires the colleagues in an organization has significant
effect in pushing their ability to achieve desirable goals by an organization.
