As well as it is expected to use system formwork in later for structure construction works as per
site requirements to achieve the acceptable progress of the works. However that detail will be
submitted later to the engineer.
4.3.4 Reinforcement work
Reinforcement used in this project will be purchased from qualified supplier. The reinforcement
shall be stored on site separated into the various sizes either in racks or on a hard impermeable
base in such a manner that it remains straight and free from contamination. Reinforcement supplied
by different manufacturers shall be stored separately. Any reinforcement which is likely to remain
in storage for a long period shall be protected from the weather so as to avoid corrosion and pitting.

All the test report and other quality certificate of the reinforcement will be submitted to the
Engineer for checking and approval before using in the permanent works. The reinforcement shall
be cut accurately to length and bend to the shape shown on the approved bar bending schedules
within the acceptable dimensional tolerances. After bending, reinforcement will be thoroughly
cleared, and all dirty, scale, loose rust, oil and other contaminants removed before it is placed in

8
Construction of Main Canal from Nebadagahawatta to Mahakithula Reservoir Inlet Tunnel (from 5+250km to 22+300)

the permanent works, and bars will be securely tied together in bundles or groups and legibly
labeled for easy identification.
Binding with wire will be the main connection patterns, the lap length will conform to the standards
as approved by the Engineer. Reinforcement will be fixed rigidly so that no movement can occur
during concrete placing. The reinforcement bars shall be positioned in right position within a
dimensional tolerance of ±20mm in any direction parallel to a concrete face and within a tolerance
of ±5mm perpendicular to a face, provided that the cover is not thereby decreased below the
minimum shown on the drawings

Spacer blocks shall be used for ensuring that the correct cover is maintained on the reinforcement.
The block shall be as small as practicable and of a shape agreed by the Engineer. As well as
reinforcement bars should be cleaned prior to start the concrete pouring works. All reinforcement
shall be inspected in place and approved by the Engineer before placing the concrete.

In addition to above specifications, the pier foundations should be anchored to the rock by 12mm
diameter anchor road. The anchoring depth shall be 300mm and chemical anchoring method shall
be used as specified in design drawings. The material specifications of anchoring chemical shall
be submitted later to the engineer’s review and approval.

Figure 04: Anchoring connection between pier foundation and rock specified in design drawings
4.3.5 Placing and curing of concrete

No concrete shall be placed at the construction site until all formwork, installation of embedded
parts, reinforcing steel, and surfaces against which concrete is to be cast have been inspected and
a written approval given by the Engineer.
As well as construction joints are formed in structures due to construction sequences which were
explained in above chapters. Those construction joint should be treated to ensure the proper
interface bond with the subsequent concrete lift. Therefore, green cutting shall be carried out for

9
Construction of Main Canal from Nebadagahawatta to Mahakithula Reservoir Inlet Tunnel (from 5+250km to 22+300)

first concrete lift (construction joint) using a high pressure air-water jet. As well as a bonding agent
or starter concrete layer shall be laid over construction joint just before to lay new concrete. The
starter concrete layer shall be prepared by mixing additional 50kg of cement per 1m3 of concrete.
The thickness of starter concrete layer shall be 50mm.

The concrete shall be transported by truck mixers from batching plant to site. The time elapsing
between mixing and placing a batch of concrete shall be as short as practicable. In any case no
longer as will permit completion of placing and compaction before the onset of initial set. If the
placing of any batch of concrete is delayed beyond this period, the concrete shall not be placed in
the permanent works. Concrete left in the trucks, cars or skips has to be completely wasted before
a new concrete batch is loaded.
The mobile concrete pump car, mobile concrete pump stationary concrete pump or crane shall be
used for concrete pumping. The vibrators for use and as standby shall be ample for the requirements
during the placement. Unless otherwise agreed by the Engineer concrete shall not be allowed to
fall freely through a height greater than 1.2 m.

Each layer of concrete shall be compacted by vibration while and after being placed in position to
form a dense, homogeneous material free from voids. The concrete shall be worked up hard against
adjoining surfaces. Each concrete layer shall be vibrated completely before another layer of
concrete is placed upon it. In generally the concrete shall be placed in layers not exceeding 500mm
(R/F concrete) in depth after compaction. As well as any case the thickness of any layer of
concrete shall not be less than four times of the maximum nominal size of aggregate. However if
the layer thickness of concretes are unable to maintain within the above limitation due to any
special case, then contractor shall be obtained engineer’s instruction.

Immersion vibrators shall penetrate the full depth of the layer and shall enter the underlying layer
so as to ensure proper integration of successive layers. They shall be inserted in a near-vertical
position at sufficiently close regular intervals, which shall be within the distance over which
vibration is visibly effective and in any case shall not exceed 600 mm, for long enough time to
ensure proper compaction, and shall be withdrawn slowly to prevent the formation of voids. The
concrete shall be vibrated until it presents a compact reflecting surface and the bubbles of entrapped
air have ceased to escape. Over-vibration causing to segregation, surface laitance, or leakage of
grout through formwork.

Figure 05: Placing of immersion vibrators

The maximum permitted temperature rises and the temperature distribution in concrete after
placement will be determined by the Engineer based on the laboratory test performed prior to
start of concrete work using the actual cement, concrete mix proportions, and diffusivity for the
concrete under consideration, and/or by actual field monitoring.

Concrete shall be protected during the first stage of hardening from loss of moisture and from the
development of temperature differentials within the concrete sufficient to cause cracking. The
methods used for curing shall not cause damage of any kind to the concrete.

The curing shall be carried out using approved curing agent and water curing. Curing shall be
continued for as long as may be necessary to achieve the above objectives. All concrete shall be
cured for a period of not less than 14 consecutive days or until the concrete is covered by later
construction, whichever is the shorter period.

5. Formwork removal
It is the contractor’s sole responsibility to avoid damages to concrete surfaces during the form work
ejecting process. Since several type of basic structural elements are available in elevated
rectangular open canal structures and the formwork & false work periods are different from
structure to structure. The time for formwork removal specified in specification (Clause 3.2.2.6) is
as follows. But these periods are subjected to engineer’s prior approval. As well as all the defect
and other required repairs should be carried out using approved repair materials.

Table 5.1: Time for the formwork removal
