Basketball Referee signs on Violation


Objectives
1. Have a deeper understanding on the different violations of basketball
2. Execute the sign of basketball violations.

Foul
Basketball is a sport that include physical contact from a player to the other player from
the opposing team, either offensive or defensive. Foul is an illegal contact (hitting, pushing,
commit by a player against the opposing player.

Note: executing this signal, blow the whistle first in order to call the players’ attention. Then
raise one hand with a close fist and the other hand with open fist and fingers are pointing to
the player who committed the foul.
Personal fouls

1. Holding – is an illegal contact of an opponent that


interferes with the freedom of movement of a player.
This contact (holding) can occur with any parts of the
body.

Executing this hand signal, one hand with close fist must be raised not higher than the
head and the other hand must hold the other on the wrist as to show action (holding)

2. Pushing – is an illegal personal


contact where a player forcibly moves
or attempts to move a player from the
opposing team with or without the ball.

Executing this hand signal, both hands with open palms acting like pushing something or
someone in front

3. Blocking – is an illegal physical contact


commit by a player to prevent the
opponent’s movement with or without the
ball.

Executing this hand signal, palms facing down and act like striking at the waist level
4. Charging – is an illegal physical contact
made by an offensive player (with or
without the ball) by pushing hard or
moving into the opposing player

Executing this hand signal, close fist and extending it in the direction of the court of the
defensive team.

5. Double – is a situation where 2 players


from different teams commit personal foul
on each other at approximately the same
time. In a double foul situation, the
following must be consider;
o Fouls must be observe from the 2
players from different teams,
o It must involve physical contact
between two players from
different teams,
o There should be a penalty.

Executing this hand signal, close fists crossing above the head.
6. Unsportsmanlike foul – is a physical contact
committed by a player which in the judgment of
the officials is:
o the player made the contact doesn’t a
legitimate attempt to go after the ball,
o the player does an excessive, extra
hard contact to an opposing player
o the player made the contact is behind
the offensive player (dribbler) during a
fast break in an attempt to stop the fast
break and there is no defensive player
between the basket and the dribbler
o a defensive player commit a foul
against any of the offensive players on
the court during the throw-in of the
offensive player and the ball is still in
out-of-bound. This situation is
applicable only in the last 2 minutes and
less during the Fourth Quarter and
Overtime.

Executing this hand signal, raise both hands one with a close fist and the other is holding
the wrist just above the head.
ACTIVITY
Choose at least 3 from the personal fouls and execute them. Take a picture of you showing the
proper execution of the personal fouls you have chosen. Then labeled them with the proper name
they’ve been called. Also, wear your Physical Education Uniform.
