MICROFICTION-Short Story
“And now, just seven drops of cobra venom” cried out Elena in excitement, as she was almost
done preparing her ingredients to brew the most wicked love potion in the world. She was known
as the witch of the woods or just a mere hoax for some ancient folks, she was very skilled in
sorcery and could cast all sorts of spells known to witch kind. Unlike other witches Elena was
good hearted and only did what was best for the world, but from the point of view of the human
beings, all the things that a witch does was unforgiving. Elena knew this and tried to hide her
identity knowing she was different, but she was to fail. Though trying to stay strong she began
to be filled with sorrow and loneliness. One day feeling depressed and lonely she wanted person
whom he could trust and support her, she decided to take on an apprentice, ignoring her fellow
witches warnings. Searching through several towns, she finally found a right young man for the
job named Smith , he was charming and good hearted. He lived in a small town that wasn’t
known by a lot of people, he was strong and hardworking and everyone in the village liked him.
He was perfect for Elena in every way, except for one that he hated witches, like everyone else.
Fearing the worst, if he found who she was, Elena posed as a healer. Smith agreed on the
apprenticeship and it was settled
They traveled from place to place, healing and helping everyone they could, all the while he
didn’t have a clue as to who she really was. He didn’t learn any spells, magic or anything related
to witchcraft. Their relationship started to grow overtime, Elena began to feel very fond of her
apprentice and cared deeply for him.
On their way to a village to heal a sick woman, they stopped to camp for the night in the woods
as the sun was setting down. As Smith settled down for the night to sleep, he heard something
that sounded something like chanting. He got up and went to investigate what he was hearing ,
Smith was shocked to see Elena in front of him casting spells and commanding a big swirling
cauldron He fled to his camp in terror and started to search her stuff and stole one of her
spellbook and ran through the night. When he reached his cottage which Elena wasn’t aware of,
he ran inside. Being able to read the scripts in the spellbook, Smith started brewing a potion that
would keep witches away from him , which was Elena. He got the potion ready within minutes
and dropped the liquid at the borders of his land so that she couldn’t enter the cottage.
When Elena found out that his sleeping bag was unoccupied and her apprentice was missing, she
traced him back to the cottage . Once she reached the edge of the woods, she called out for him
and tried to enter his land, but she couldn’t enter the border as the potion which he dropped was
serving as a barrier to protect himself and Elena was thrown off her feet. She stood up and called
for him again. At last, he appeared out of his doorway and told her that he knew what she was.
Feeling betrayed and heartbroken, she immediately apologized for lying and told him to believe
her. But it was too late now.
He threatened to have her bring in front of the High Council and reveal her true self .With tears
in her eyes, Elena was driven by sadness and anger and she casted a spell which broke the
cottage and turned it into ruins. The house came down and the apprentice was crushed under the
collapsed cottage . Unsuccessful, unable to hear anymore sounds and accepting the inevitable,
that Smith was gone and it was all because of her fault. Using her magic she created a river
which swept away the cottage debris and the decay into it.
Elena returned to the woods and built a small cottage resembling her apprentice’s and started
living there . She cried and sobbed for days, turned into weeks and then months, years went by
and Elena had cried all her possible tears. She grew angry in her self and couldn’t bear the pain
of loosing the only human whom she thought who could change her. Elena stood from her place
and started chanting a spell that burnt down her cottage, her cauldron and her precious magic
potions which she had brewed with great strength and difficulty were all destroyed and turned
into ashes. She decided to give up all her magical evil powers and never return back to witchcraft
ever again and spent the rest of her life as a healer.
