Advanced Topic in Civil Engineering is an extraordinary course that brought new
learnings which is very beneficial to future civil engineers like me. Moreover, its capacity to instill new skills, knowledge, and experience isn’t just helpful to civil engineers but also to different aspects of the community specifically on the environment and its sustainability. This course is full of webinars that provided us a wide range of topics with well-known speakers that shared their valuable learnings and experiences in their field of expertise, hence, they have provided us valuable lessons we must learn in work and life. If I were to enumerate all the learnings I’ve gained in this course, this paper would just exceed the limit, however, I would want to highlight one of the major lessons it taught me which is leadership. When our group was given the task to facilitate one of the webinars, I had to stepped up to be able to organize our webinar starting from inviting speakers down to the very last minute of the webinar or the closing remarks. I realized that inviting speakers is not an easy job because you must stay in touch with them in each step of the webinar, but it pays off in the way that my network expanded as I had to talk to several speakers until I could find the best available speaker for our schedule. Moreover, one of the hardest parts of facilitating the webinar was the distribution of tasks, checking and revising every part of the webinar and publication materials, creating a program flow while preparing an alternative plan, and last but not the least I had to be versatile for any unexpected changes during the actual webinar. Versatility is an ability that is not easy to learn and that is the reason that I am thankful for this course because it has improved my ability to adapt, and I know that it would help me in my daily life and my chosen career path. As per the specific learnings I’ve gained in this course, I am still amazed on how this course enlighten me on Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation specially for typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. The guidelines that were discussed are very helpful during these times and I’m glad that the presenters were able to connect these guidelines to the construction settings here in the Philippines since I would be working on this field after graduation. Furthermore, another important topic that was discussed in the webinar series is the sustainable and renewable engineering and I personally loved the lessons that the presenters imparted upon us because as a future civil engineer it is necessary to aim sustainability together with development because we must consider the life-long effects to the environment and the overall sustainability of the industry of every construction method we utilized and every construction project we take. Also, as our professor always mentioned, one of the objectives of this course is to improve our public speaking skills and I believe that this course has attained this objective because we were given the chance to speak freely and creatively with our mini-webinar series. Public speaking is a challenge for most people that is why I would like to commend the university, the department, and this course because it helps us, students, to develop this skill as early as possible before it becomes a requirement in our chosen field. I therefore conclude that Arcales, Angela C. August 6, 2021 CE176P-A2 Engr . Quiniquini our mini-webinar series is a success because it has showered every participant the valuable learnings that are necessary in life.
