1) Input Devices:
An input device is any hardware device that sends data to a computer, allowing you to interact
with and control it. There are various input devices from which mouse, keyboard, joystick, light
pen, touchscreen, are described below.
a) Mouse:
It is one of the most commonly used input devices which helps a user interact with a computer. It
is a very useful input device which helps a user to give instruction to a computer to get a result. It
has a pointing cursor which can be controlled by a user by hovering the mouse in the mouse pad
to click on the icons of computer and give instructions to it. Commonly, a mouse has 2 buttons
left and right button and a wheel in between.
b) Keyboard:
It is also one of the very popular input devices used to give instruction to a computer. It has
many keys in it and resembles as a typewriter. We can press the keys and give instructions to the
computer to do our work and give us a reliable output.
We can see many keys in a keyboard like numeric, alphabetic, function, Control, special purpose
keys. All these keys are used to give different kind of input instructions to a computer.
c) Joystick:
Joystick is also a pointing device live a mouse, which is used to move the cursor position on a
monitor screen. It is a stick having a spherical ball at its both lower and upper ends. The lower
spherical ball moves in a socket. The joystick can be moved in all four directions.
d) Track Ball:
Track ball is an input device that is mostly used in notebook or laptop computer, instead of a
mouse. This is a ball which is half inserted and by moving fingers on the ball, the pointer can be
moved.
e) Touch Screen:
A touchscreen is a display that also serves as an input device. Since touchscreen devices accept
input directly through the screen, they do not require external input devices, such as mice and
keyboards. This makes touchscreens ideal for computer, as well as portable devices, such as
tablets and smartphones.
f) Light Pen:
Light pen is a pointing device similar to a pen. It is used to select a displayed menu item or draw
pictures on the monitor screen. It consists of a photocell and an optical system placed in a small
tube.

2) Output Devices:
An output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment which converts information into
human readable form. It can be text, graphics, tactile, audio, and video. Hard copy output devices
like printer and plotter and Softcopy output devices like monitor, video output and audio
response are described below.
a) Hard Copy Devices:

i) Printer:
Printer is an output device which gives out the resultant output to the instructions given by a user
in a hard copy form. These outputs are in paper form and can be image, text or both.

ii) Plotter:
Plotter is also an output device which gives hard copy output. It is much live printer but it is used
to print vector graphics. Instead of toner, plotters use a pen, pencil, marker, or another writing
tool to draw multiple, continuous lines onto paper rather than a series of dots like a traditional
printer.

b) Soft Copy Devices:

i) Monitor:
Monitor is the most commonly used output device which displays result to the instructions given
by a user. It gives result in the form of softcopy. Monitor is connected to the computer via VGA
cable, HDMI cable, DVI cable etc. or other connectors.
ii) Video Output:
An output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment which converts information into
human read able form. It can be text, graphics, tactile, audio, and video. Some of the output
devices are Visual Display Units (VDU) i.e., a Monitor, Printer graphic Output devices, Plotters,
Speakers etc.
