Science Inquiry 1 Evidence For Human Evolution

The document outlines an assessment task for a human biology course requiring students to research and present evidence for human evolution. Students will create a portfolio and presentation summarizing fossils, comparative studies, and hominid evolutionary trends as evidence for how humans evolved.

Evidence for Human Evolution

The great majority of scientists accept the general idea of evolution --the gradual change in the
characteristics of a species over many generations. However, this idea has always been
controversial and there are still many people who, for a variety of reasons, do not accept the idea
that species evolve. It is important, therefore, to look at the sorts of evidence available to
support the theory of evolution.

Use a variety of research techniques to investigate the evidence for human evolution by
creating portfolio ( summaríse info), evidence based on the following topics:

a. fossils (giong nguoi) that were discovered including when and where the fossils were found,
the scientific name that was given to the fossils at the time of their discovery, place
(revision series pg 121)the significance of the finds at the time, the scientists who made
significant contributions in the early days of the research for human origins, and any
controversy that they raised in the scientific community.

b. comparative studies

c. Hominid evolutionary trends including determining relatedness and possible evolutionary

pathways for hominids using evidence from comparisons of modern humans and the
great apes.
You are advised to use any applications of choice, format, creativity and applications of ICT
in making your individual portfolio and video presentation.

Each student presents a specified area of evidence for human evolution. A separate
spreadsheet will be available for you to fill in to avoid covering the same topic.

The aim of the research project and presentation of task is to:

● Increase skills in locating, gathering and summarising information.

● Increase presentation skills including skills in speaking, writing and non-verbal
communication using both technical terminology and the form and style for scientific
communication.

A marking rubric will be available on Monday, July 12, 2021, Period 3.
