Chapter 2 - Resort History

The history of resorts began with the public baths of ancient Rome in the 2nd century BC. These early baths grew into resort-like establishments providing amenities. In the Middle Ages, spa towns became popular destinations for their mineral springs and perceived health benefits. In the 18th-19th centuries, the development of grand hotels in Europe established resorts as leisure destinations for wealthy classes. This model spread to North America and Asia, with mountain palaces in China and beach towns in Thailand among the earliest Asian resorts.
