MEANING OF EVALUATION

 Evaluation is the process of determining the extent to which


objectives are being achieved, the effectiveness of the learning
experiences provided in the classroom, and how well the goals
of education have been accomplished.

 It is simply the process of systematically assessing the design,


implementation and impact of programs, policies or projects.
DEFINITION OF EVALUATION

 Evaluation is the value judgement or an observation , performance test or


indeed any data whether directly measured or inferred.

- ( INTERNATIONAL DICTIONARY OF EDUCATION)

 From an educational point of view evaluation can be defined as -

Systematic , continuous process of determining the extent in which


specified educational objectives previously identified and defined are
attained.
FORMATIVE EVALUATION

 It refers to assessment of learning while teaching/ learning is in progress.

 It is used to identify students needs in order to guide them towards desired


goals.

 In other words, it is used to provide teachers with useful information about


strengths and weaknesses of the students within an instructional context.

 Examples: oral questions , class tests assignments tests and end term
examinations
ORIGIN OF THE TERM

 Scriven coined the term “Formative Evaluation” in the year 1967.

 Scriven’s described formative evaluation was intended to foster


development and improvement within the ongoing activity.

 Benjamin Bloom took up the term in 1968 in the Book Learning for
Mastery to consider formative assessment as a tool for improving the
teaching learning process for students.

NEED OF FORMATIVE EVALUATION

 Formative evaluation is used to monitor the learning process of students.

 It gives students evidence of their current progress to actively manage and


adjust their own learning.

 Formative evaluation provides constant feedback to the students about their

success and failures while the instruction is in process.

 Feedback will provide reinforcement to students and will enable both teachers

and students to make modifications wherever required.

 It develops a lot of challenges for both students as well as teachers.

 It may not be practical for large enrollment class.
