Problem Set 2
Q1. What are the Lagrangian and Eulerian description of fluid motion? How do they differ from
one another? A weather balloon is launched into the atmosphere to transmit information about
weather conditions to monitoring ground stations. It is neutrally buoyant when reaches an
altitude. Is this a Lagrangian or Eulerian measurement? Explain.
Q2. Define a steady flow field in the Eulerian frame of reference. In steady flow is it possible for
a particle to experience a nonzero acceleration.
Q3. A two dimensional flow is described in the lagrangian system as
x x 0 e kt y 0 (1 e 2 kt )
y y 0 e kt
Find the equation of the fluid particle in the flow field and the velocity of the components in the
Eulerian system.
Q4. The position of a fluid particle is given as
x1 x10 (1 t )
x 2 x 20 (1 t ) 2
x3 x30 (1 t ) 3
x10 , x 20 and x 30 are the position coordinate of the fluid at t=0. Determine the expression for velocity
and acceleration components of the fluid in terms of both Eulerian and Lagrangian coordinates.
Q4. How mass and volume flow rates are related to each other.
Q5. Water fills a cylindrical tank to depth h. The tank has diameter D. The water flows out at
average velocity V 0 from a hole in the bottom of area A0 . Use the Reynolds transport theorem to
find an expression for the instantaneous depth change dh/dt .
Q6. Three pipes steadily deliver water at 200 C to a large exit pipe. The velocity V2 5 m/s, and
the exit flow rate Q 4 120 m3/h. Find (a) V1 , (b) V 2 , and (c) V 4 if it is known that increasing Q3
by 20 percent would increase Q 4 by 10 percent.
Q7. The open tank as shown in the figure below contains water at 20o C and is filled through
section 1. Assuming the flow to be incompressible derive an analytic expression for the water
level change dh/dt in terms of arbitrary volume flows (Q1,Q2,Q3) and tank diameter d. If the
water level h is constant determine exit velocity V2 for V1 =3 m/s and Q3=0.01 m3/s.
Q8. The pipe flow fills a cylindrical surge tank as shown in the figure below. At time t=0, the
water depth in the tank is 30 cm. Estimate the time required to fill the remainder of the tank.
Q9. A desktop computer is to be cooled by a fan whose flow rate is 0.34 m3/min. Determine the
mass flow rate of air through the fan at an elevation of 3400 m where the density of air is 0.7
kg/m3. If the average velocity of air is not to exceed 110 m/min, determine the diameter of the
casing fan.
Q10. A hydraulic jump is in place downstream from a spillway as in the figure below. In the
upstream of the jump, the depth of the stream is 0.6 ft and average stream velocity is 18 ft/s. Just
downstream of the jump, the average stream velocity is 3.4 ft/s. Calculate the depth of the stream
h , just downstream of the jump.
Q11. Air at standard conditions enters into a compressor at a rate of 10ft3/s. It leaves the tank
through a 1.2 inch diameter pipe with a density of 0.0035 slugs/ft3 and uniform speed of 700 ft/s.
Determine the rate at which mass of air in the tank is increasing or decreasing. Determine the
average time rate of change of air density within the tank.
