Section B

Short answer Question

[6*4=24]

Attempt any six questions:

1. Briefly explain the different types of errors in linear measurement.

2. What do you mean by linear error of closure in traverse? How do you adjust the loop when
angles are read by theodolite and distance of the traverse leg by chain with mathematical
expressions?
3. Explain the detail method of chaining providing appropriate sketches .
4. Define a shrunk scale. A 20m long tape of standard length at 84 degree F was used to measure a
line. The mean temperature during the measurements was 65 degree F. The measured distance
was 882.10 meters with different slopes as per the following table.
Slope Distance measured
2° 10΄ 100m
4° 12΄ 150m
1° 6΄ 50m
7° 48΄ 200m
3° 0΄ 300m
5° 10΄ 82.10m
Find the true length of line if the coefficient of expansion is 6.5*10^-7 per degree F.
5. What is meant by face left and face right of theodolite? How would you change the face? What
instrumental errors are eliminated by face left and face right observations?
6. How a closed traverse is different from open traverse? A traverse can be computed using
independent coordinates or consecutive coordinates. Which of the following method follows
the fundamental principle of surveying?
7. Discuss briefly the applications of Geomatics.
8. Write short note on use of contour maps for engineering purpose.

Section C (16 marks)

Attempt all four questions

9. Calculate the latitudes and departure and closing error for the following traverse. [5]
Line Length WCB
AB 89.31 45° 10΄
BC 219.76 72° 05΄
CD 151.18 161° 52΄
DE 159.10 228° 43΄
EA 232.26 300° 42΄
10. A 30m chain was found to be 6cm too long after chaining a distance of 4000m, It was tested
again at the end of the day’s work and found to be 8m too long after chaining a total distance of
7800m. If the chain was correct before the commencement of the work, find the true distance.

11. A steel tape is 30m long between and end graduations at a temperature of 29°C under a pull of
75N when lying on the flat. The tape is stretched over two supports between which it records
30.00 m, and is supported at two intermediate supports equally spaced. All the supports are at
the same level and the tape is allowed to sag freely, between the supports. If the temperature in
the field is 39°C and the pull on the tape is 45N, calculate the actual length between the end
graduations and the equivalent length at mean sea level if the measurement was made at an
elevation of 1000.00m. (4)

Area of cross section of tape = 7.0mm²

Mass of tape= 1.60kg
Coefficient of expansion= 1.1*10^-5 per °C
Young’s modulus= 2*10^5 N/mm2
Radius of earth= 6370km

12. The magnetic bearing of the sun at a place in southern hemisphere is 167 degree. Calculate the
magnetic declination. For the given bearings measured with a compass, find the interior angles
