Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving Day
The ones who partake in the celebration are the Canadians, Americans, some
Caribbean islands, Brazil and Portugal (Portugal is not so celebrated, but still,
some people remember about the holyday). At Brazil, Portugal and USA, is the
same date, the fifth Thursday of November, in Canada is the second Monday of
October. In 1941 the American congress made it a national holyday; in 1949 it
became a holyday in Brazil.
Turkey is one of the most known dishes eaten at thanksgiving, but they also eat
bread, pumpkin, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, apple or nuts and cookies.
The native American fruits are also consumed a lot, these fruits are: Cranberry,
blueberry and concord grape. Most of the time these foods are accompanied
with wine, or American cider, hot or cold.
At the start it was celebrated at New England, being the way of the Christians to
thank God for the crops they had that year, in USA it was first celebrated at
Plymouth, Massachusetts by the founders of the village, in 1620, in 1621 after a
hard winter they had a good corn harvest at the summer, at the autumn they
celebrated their first thanksgiving day.
At the holyday the people use their free time, to stay with their families, making
big reunions, parties and dinner. Other people go to the church, this date is
celebrated with parades and at USA, American football.
