Short and Open Circuit Test On Transformer
Short and Open Circuit Test On Transformer
As the term suggest we need short the low voltage side or Let says Secondary Winding
to measure the impedance of the transformer, it is convenient to connect the meter in
short circuit test in high voltage winding at this case primary side because at the high
voltage winding the current is low, Since the winding are short circuited it takes very less
voltage to let the rated current flow through the secondary side, i.e., short circuited
winding therefore when the voltage is less, the flux produced due to it, is less and Iron
loss is negligible we are getting copper losses measured at wattmeter.
We conduct this test by letting one side of the winding as Open Circuit (Secondary
Winding) with Higher Voltage, , as the Voltage source Supply the Primary Winding the
amount of Voltage input will give by Voltmeter (V1) will be equal to the voltage at this
side and no load Current (I0) will flow at this winding measured by ammeter which is
lower and negligible, because at this set up, ( no current flow at Secondary winding)
therefore copper losses are also negligible that result to our flux to be rated (Normal),
Iron losses depends to the flux therefore as the normal flux are present at the iron core
we are getting iron losses given by connected Wattmeter, (Wo).
4. What is the Purpose why this test is Required in the power transformer?
Conducting Open Circuit and Short Circuit Test is very useful to determine the
equivalent circuit of the transformer, voltage regulation and efficiency of the
transformer. In Short Circuit Test it determines the copper loss occur on the full load.
The copper loss is used for finding the efficiency of the transformer. The equivalent
resistance, impedance, and leakage reactance, while on the other hand Open-circuit test
is to determine the no-load current and iron losses of the transformer. These tests are
performed without the actual loading and because of this very less power is required for
the test. It gives a very accurate result as compared to the full load test.
