UNIT DESCRIPTION/ OBJECTIVES OF THE UNIT

This is an introductory level course designed to familiarize students with the intricacies of
appreciating the beauty and complexities of literature. It provides the necessary foundation
for literary scholarship by introducing students to the basic concepts involved in the process
of exploring literary works of various types. The course exposes the students to the
uniqueness of the various literary genres as well as the essential literary terms. There is a
practical engagement of students in the process of literary appreciation of works of prose,
drama, and poetry. This is intended to equip them with the necessary expertise they need in
their successive years of literary engagement.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course intends to achieve the following objectives:


(a) Introduce students to the study of literature and literary appreciation.
(b) Familiarize students with the unique characteristics of the various literary genres.
(c) Acquaint students with the necessary procedures of literary appreciation.
(d) Prepare students for further studies in literary appreciation.
