Literacy Autobiography
The first time I began m wlitingjourney as in third grade. In third grade, I would have

to write paragraphs about. book that was read in class. Although I do not recall the name of the

book, I remember summarizing the book in several paragraphs. This was challenging forme

ecause I was still learning English. As such, for most of my elementary and middle school

years, I would be enrolled in reading and writing classes because I did not understand and

comprehend the English language. Theseclasses wereforstudents learning English and were

Language Learners (ELI)), At first, I wasnot sureyhyJ was enrolled in these

geading. These discourse communities allowed me slowly adjust to learning English. J_was ip 3

Writing is something I find fun to do, but it can get challenging at times especially when

denot understand the prompts and have@quick turnarounØ time@submi!. For example, one of

the ways that writing can be challenging is by not having enough time to complete the writing

essignment, For me to have a great essay,l peed to take time in generatingmy ideas, putting

them into pgper,.rganizing them, and continuous review for gremmag_spelling and punctuation

Another way that writing can get challenging is by the topics that are given. Sometimes topics

for writing could be difficult to accomplish because I don't understand them. thisgoes„jptp

Writing is somethingI only use for school purposes and perhaps,
CC truggle because I do not practice it outside from my school environment. Most recently, I have
more
been getting better at writing. In high school while being enrolled in ELD classes, I learned

about reading and writing. I learned how to write complete sentences, paragraphs, and review m

writing. In addition, it was helpful that the teachers understood my background and as to why I

made I made so many errors in my writing. One of the biggest problems in my writing is that I

think about thoughts in Spanish, and they are hard to convey them in on paper in English.

Sometimes, they come as they sound in Spanish, but is different from English. At first, I was

very concerned that I never needed that class, but after being in that class I did learn a few m re

things I didn't know about writing.

Reading and writing have been my least favorite subject in school, but are ones that I

continue to learn and grow from. In elementary and middle school,'writing was never fun for me

because I always struggled. There are several factors that have contributed to me adapting to the

English language. One of those factors is growing up in a household in which the primary

language spokenis Spanish. I only spoke_Englishin the classroom at school and when I server

a translator for my parents in events such as doctor appointments. Another factor of why readin

and writing in English has been challenging for me is because of the lack of preparation received

in primary schoo . swe know many students that come from( ltle one chools and

disadvantage backgrounds get moved from year to year without academic support. Many of my

peers and I struggled during classes and our teachers would say 'to do our best; however, doing

our best did not equate to us learning. A third factor is that my primary education did notvalue

the mmünity capital wealth t at I brought into the classroom. This includes my native

language, Spanish. Not once did they acknowledged that I was fluent in a different language and
adapting as well as
learning a new language
is not easy. As a result, I have always feared writing
and reading because
it is a skillset tha continues.-o be challenging.
Although I have not had
the best experiences in reading and writing, 1 do not want to
paint a negative picture
about these lived experiences in my education. Throughout high school I
was getting more comfortable
with writing because my teachers were being helpful in teaching
me how to write essays. In high school,
we covered the basic structure in writing an easy such as
what to include in an introduction, body, and conclusion. In addition, my teachers also showed

us the different types of essays we can write. This was helpful because I was able to adjust my

writing accordingly to the types of essays. Though, I believe that this learning might have come a

bit late in my writing journey because I feel that this is something that I should have begun to

learn in middle school. For the most part, my English teachers were helpful in my writing and

reading process, however I feel like I am not up to speed with everyone else and currently

playing catch up. For example, now that I have entered college, I feel like a bit behind in my

writing because there is a high expectation. Even though my teachers taught me how to do

essay, I am not confident in my writing skills yet. The task of writing will always be diffic It for

me to do, but is something that I will always need even later in my career. Therefore, writi g will

at times be fun and get challenging, but it will be needed for my future.
