Pavement Engineering 4300:565 Assignment #6 Spring 2014: Submitted by Mir Shahnewaz Arefin Student Id: 2824475

The document summarizes an experiment that measured the dynamic modulus of an asphalt mixture specimen under varying frequencies of loading. Stresses and strains on the specimen were recorded using a load cell and LVDT sensors. The student is asked to analyze the experimental results by calculating stresses and strains, plotting stress-strain relationships, determining loading frequencies, and calculating dynamic modulus and phase angle values for each loading set. A log-log plot of dynamic modulus versus frequency and a semi-log plot of phase angle versus frequency are also requested.

Problem 1

A dynamic modulus (E*) test was conducted on an asphalt mixture specimen measuring
4” in diameter and 6” in height. Testing was performed at 130oF (54oC) over a range of
frequencies.
A load cell was used to record the applied load. Mix response was measured using three
LVDTs 120o apart. For simplicity only one LVDT reading is included. The LVDT gage
length is 100mm, attached to the specimen as shown in the following schematic.

Using the experimental test results presented in “HW6_Estar Test Results.xls”:

1) Calculate the stresses and strains from the load cell and LVDT readings. Note that
stress = load cell reading/specimen area and strain = LVDT reading/LVDT gage
length.
2) For each loading set and on the same graph, plot the applied stress and resulting
strain versus loading time. Since stresses and strains widely differ in magnitude, two
scales must be used. This can be done as follows: right click on one of the curves,
select “Format Data Series”, select “Axis”, choose “Secondary Axis”.
3) Calculate the loading frequency for each of the 6 loading sets.
4) For each loading frequency, analyze a single cycle.
Record:
 Maximum applied stress
 Minimum applied stress
 Applied stress level (stress level = maximum stress – minimum stress)
 Maximum resulting strain
 Minimum resulting strain
 Resulting strain level (strain level = maximum strain – minimum strain)
 Time per cycle
 Time lag between maximum stress and maximum strain
 Dynamic modulus, E*

 Phase angle, mix

5) Plot E* versus frequency on a log-log scale.
6) Plot mix versus frequency on a semi-log scale.

 Plot E* versus testing frequency on a log-log scale.

 Construct a master curve for the dynamic modulus using a reference temperature of
70oF (i.e., plot E* versus reduced frequency on a log-log scale).
 Fit a sigmoidal model to the dynamic modulus master curve.
 Plot the shift factor versus temperature curve.
 Find the coefficients of the Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) equation.

Sigmoidal Model:

α
log ( E¿ )=δ + β +γ log⁡(x r)
1+ e

where,
E* = dynamic modulus
, , , and  = sigmoidal model parameters
xr = reduced time or reduced frequency

WLF Equation:

−C 1 (T −T ref )
log ( a T ) =
C2 +(T −T ref )

where,
a T = temperature shift factor = fr / f
C1 and C2 = WLF model parameters
T = testing temperature
Tref = reference temperature
