Classical music is dying positively

By Edison Wan

With the development of the society, every individual always lives a fast-
paced life. Classical music is not the best entertainment for them, it
wastes time and is boring. Teenagers do not get interested and no more
passionate in the whole idea of it. Somehow, it has become
unwelcoming. Because loads of ‘classical’ rules, classical music is too
formal and stiff. In normal day, we are breaking the rules, so it is dying
rapidly and thus save it.

Classic music industry has stagnated. For John Adams

composer. I think it is a problem--people are
skittish when it comes to anything new
because they are never exposed to it. The
unfamiliar is scary. It’s true that classical
music just reacts to it. The music we
champion is getting older and older.
Ironically, we’re keeping the dead alive and we’re killing off the
living. It is inevitable, so classical is dying faster and faster.

Performances were a chance for artists and audiences to connect

unattainable in other media, as a form of mutual communication.
Applause between movements was allowed in the past; Improvisation
were commonplace. Liszt, who is an exceptional composer and pianist,
used his technical and his own charm to woo audiences. But all that
changed in the 20th century
because ‘rules’ appeared and
began incorporating
themselves into
performances. Clapping and
coughing in the middle of a
piece? Forbidden.
Performers speaking from the stage? Seldom. Improvisation in a
concert? Almost never taught in the most prestigious classical music
colleges or conservatories. That makes classical music become boring
and it is not suitable for people.

Luckily, we have more and more resources in the future. The internet is
the 8th wonder of the world! To make sure ‘old’ classical music is not
dying meaningless, we need to create contemporary music and make it
become popular. I believe the only way to make people comfortable
with the new music is to perform it regularly, record and play it on the
radio. Just like we currently program classical music.

Now when we break the ‘rules’, it will make the art-form more
entertaining and intoxicating. Allowing us to share more emotion and
passion through the music. Encouraging more young people to have fun
with the performing arts instead of viewing them as a necessary work
parents give and require a boring practice. We need to program
improvisation into a part of concerts. It is full of interactive and becomes
not dull anymore. It is bringing classical music more life than ever.

I suppose we have to keep the new music appear continuously, and not
live in an old century. No one will ever stop listening to Beethoven or
Chopin. They’re still fantastic composers. We will just listen to them as
well as John Williams and Arvo Part. If the variety of music is growing
increasingly, the world will become more fantastic and interesting.
