2. The response of a damped single degree of freedom system with 𝑚 = 15 𝑘𝑔 and 𝑘 = 1000 𝑁/𝑚 is
found to be 𝑥(𝑡) = (0.1 + 1.8165𝑡)𝑒 −8.165𝑡 . Determine damping constant of the system. Also
determine the initial condition to which the system is subjected?
3. A critically damped system subjected to an initial displacement of 0.02 m and an initial velocity of – 1
m/s crosses the equilibrium position at 𝑡 = 0.025 𝑠 before coming to rest. Determine the natural
frequency of the system.
4. A single degree of freedom system with 𝑚 = 10 𝑘𝑔 and 𝑘 = 1000 𝑁/𝑚 has a logarithmic decrement
of 2.5. If the system is given an initial velocity of 1 m/s when it is at an equilibrium position, determine
the maximum displacement of the system.
5. A single degree of freedom system has a mass of 5 kg and a stiffness of 300 N/m. The amplitude
decreases 0.25 of the initial value after five consecutive cycles. Determine the damping constant of the
system.
6. A vibrating system consists of a mass of 4 kg, stiffness of 150 N/m and damping constant of 5 N.s/m.
Determine:
(a) the damping ratio,
(b) the natural frequency of damped vibration,
(c) logarithmic decrement,
(d) the ratio of two consecutive amplitudes and
(e) the number of cycles after which the original amplitude is reduced to 20 %.
7. When a 50 kg machine is supported by a spring and a viscous damper, free vibrations appear to decay
exponentially with a frequency of 70 rad/s. When a 60 kg machine is placed on the same foundation,
the frequency of the exponentially decaying oscillations is 65 rad/s. Determine the stiffness and
equivalent viscous damping constant of the system.
8. The amplitude of vibration a single degree of freedom system with a viscous damper decays to half of
its initial value in 5 cycles with a period of 0.25 s. If the mass of the system is 20 kg, determine the
spring stiffness and the damping constant of the system.
