Battling a voiceless foe

On the wake of this epidemic, it may be noted that the Department of Education was devastated
by the deaths of teachers and students who misleadingly connected distance learning as key
reason. According to health specialists who placed an eye on this issue, distant learning could be
one of the causes but when trying to look at its fundamental core, it can be concluded that the
victims surely experienced mental disorders.

Similarly, many students have had distressful experiences during the lockdown which might
result to emotional struggles and suicidal tendencies.

Other people might respond to this hilariously, and might say…

“ Arte mo lang yan”.

Hearing this line after letting other people know about your condition could be one of the major
reasons why most of students are anxious of seeking help from others. Aside from this, when
people learn that someone has mental problem, they would probably think something is wrong
with him, or worse, insane. Due to this, instead of voicing out what’s on their mind, students
tend to keep their feelings hidden because they are afraid of other people’s reactions. Thus,
leaving the problem unnoticed, consequently, untreated.

And this matter is no joke. This one calls for attention.

Survey says that high school students usually experience mental health issues that’s why Ana
Riza Maguigad, guidance counselor, shared in an interview that the government’s initiative on
integrating mental health support service in the educational system is critically needed to assist
and empower young people cope with the new challenges brought and stay attuned with the new
normal. It is for the reason that schools are undoubtedly the most important place to promote
child and adolescent mental health, as well as to identify and treat mental illness early and
effectively.

Undeniably, when adolescents struggle with mental health problems, they often have attendance
problems, difficulty completing assignments, increased conflicts with adults and peers. Also,
mental health problems adolescents have negatively impact their academic productivity and
interpersonal relationships, and as a result of such problems, one million of adolescents – which
is deemed to be very high – drop out of school. To sum up, mental problems negatively influence
schooling and perchance, could reduce the quality of life of a child.

Thus, if there would be one part of our health that needs most of our attention that should be our
mental health. Everybody knows the fact that mental health affects all aspect of our life yet, it’s
the most neglected portion of our health.

The integration of mental health into the educational system could be considered as a great leap
to stamp out or if not, lessen the growing case of mentally struggling students. This could serve
as an eye opener to fight over this unseen dilemma. And only if everybody shows selfless
support and genuine care to one another, and provides a friendly and happy environment in and
out of the school, then no concerns will be left unnoticed.

The government already took the lead, it’s about time to take our part. The project alone will
never take effect without an open-minded individual willing to make a change.

Mental issues are said to be silent killers. If we keep on neglecting this, it might not just slay one
life, but could gradually wreck the hopes in every dreamer. Nonetheless, having mental health
support service in the curriculum, it is expected that closed doors will be opened, budding hopes
will progressively bloom, and improved quality of life for the youth will be imminent.
