Assignment 1 (Visualizer Document) 2020ED142389 Purity Jepkemoi Kangogo

A document reader is a device that converts printed text into digital text files, speech, or braille for visually impaired users. It scans printed documents and uses optical character recognition to create ASCII text files that can then be read aloud or printed in braille. Visualizers are useful education tools that allow teachers to project materials onto a screen for students to see more easily. They support peer learning, free up teacher time, and improve comprehension. Key developments in educational technology include the earliest use of pictographs and signs, the introduction of print media and correspondence education in the 1800s, and the modern uses of videoconferencing, learning management systems, and webinars.

PURITY JEPKEMOI KANGOGO

1. How a visualizer/document reader works

-A document reader is a device that reads and inputs into a computer marks and
characters on a special form, as by optical or magnetic character recognition.
-It is a device that converts an electronic file or printed matter to form a suitable for use
by people with visual impairment. The output can be in form of enhanced video, speech
or braille. Some document readers acts like zoom viewers; they make characters on a
computer screen look larger.
-When printed matter is scanned, the OCR program converts the text into an ASCII file
(plain digital text). A speech synthesizer converts the text into audible words and
sentences. Braille produces elevated dots on a surface, allowing the user to read the
document.

2. How a teacher can effectively use a visualizer/document reader in his/her class

Visualizer is an essential tool in today’s classroom learning. From supporting curriculum
led learning to improving engagement among pupils. It is helpful in the following ways:
 Supports peer and self-assessment.
 Frees up teacher’s time, improving productivity
 Improves comprehension and reduces marking
 Promotes inclusion in the classroom
 Share best practice and resources across the school
3. a)Advantages of document reader/ visualizer
 Visualizer can easily project 3 dimensional images which are not all possible
with any other electronic equipment
 Very easy to use
 Have transformed how teachers teach and students learn.
 A visualizer can capture text up to a great detail and that’s why it has started
being used extremely in the publishing industry to take photographs of the
branded products for the purpose of advertisement.
 Through a visualizer you can view negatives of a photo as positives. Its helpful
for doctors, medical students who may need to develop photos during course
work in a clinic, medical lab.
 It improves on accuracy
b) Disadvantages of document reader/visualizer
 Maintenance can be expensive
 Adjusting a visualizer can take a while. It has got to be fully set up ready to go all
the time. If it doesn’t you’ve lost time and class
 Lighting can also be an issue

4. Key points in the timeline that are a significant part of the development of the
technology in education beginning with the 1800s

 Pointed sticks-man started to use sticks to in script signs and symbols on the
leaves of trees and knives at the bark of trees.
 Tribal priests systemized bodies of knowledge and cultures invented pictographs
or sign writing to record and transmit information.
 The use of print media for teaching in 1970 by the Open University
 The creation of a cheap and reliable postal system in the 1840s led to the
development of the first formal correspondence education with the University of
London.
 Audio-conferencing-was used to supplement other teaching media.
 The development of video compression technology and relatively low-cost led to
the introduction of lecture capture systems for recording and streaming classroom
lectures.
 Video-conferencing-using dedicated cable systems and dedicated conferencing
rooms was used in teaching learners.
 Web-based learning management system in 1990s
 Television for schools and general adult education in 1960s.
 Webinars are now used widely for delivering lectures over the internet.
