Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has brought into attention the mental
health problems of this vulnerable group. The aim of this study was to assess the
Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic to the Mental Health Condition of Grade 12
Students of Tala Senior High School.
The researchers conducted an online based survey from June 17-19 2021.
The participants responded to an online questionnaire that included informed
consent, basic information, and a 30- item questionnaire which divided into 4 parts.
The researchers received 71 effective responses.
Findings suggest that the mental health of students should be monitored
during pandemic, especially for younger students, and those who paid too much
attention to the news of the pandemic.
CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM
Introduction
COVID-19 has changed many of our daily routines in a way no one
anticipated. Many of us are at home more to minimize exposure. With the
appearance of the novel corona-virus at the end of 2019, daily life began to change
for many people around the globe. As the SARS-CoV-2 virus continued to spread,
and the COVID-19 pandemic landed on our shores, it completely disrupted our daily
routines. The current pandemic has impacted nearly every aspect of life including
access to medical care. Unfortunately, many people have become ill with a
COVID-19 infection, and many more may become ill in the future.
This resulted in inducing a considerable degree of fear, worry and concern in
the population at large and among certain groups in particular, such as older adults,
care providers, students, teachers and people with underlying health conditions.
In public mental health terms, the main psychological impact to date is
elevated rates of stress or anxiety but as new measures and impacts are introduced,
especially quarantine and its effects on many people’s usual activities, routines or
livelihoods levels of loneliness, depression and suicidal actions.
While nations struggle to manage the initial waves of the death and disruption
associated with the pandemic, accumulating evidence indicates another “second
wave” is building: rising rates of mental health. As with the first COVID-19 wave, the
mental health wave will disproportionately affect people’s life and Hispanic
individuals, older
adults, lower socioeconomic groups of all races and ethnicities, and health care
workers.
Moreover, the stress and social disruption caused by the pandemic has
heightened depression and anxiety globally, and is adversely affecting many
individuals with pre-existing psychiatric disorders. This imminent mental health surge
will bring further challenges for individuals, families, and communities.
The researchers came up with this topic because they want to determine if
the chronic disease called COVID-19 Pandemic has Impacted Grade 12 students
Mental Health Condition. The researchers also want to give suggestions,
recommendations and some ways on how to cope-up amidst the current
circumstance.
Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine the Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic in the Mental
Health Condition of Grade 12 students in Tala Senior High School. Specifically, it
sought to answer the following questions:
1. What are the Grade 12 student’s perception about COVID-19 Pandemic.
2. Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic to the Mental Health Condition of Grade 12
students.
3. How do Grade 12 students cope-up with the current situation
4. What are the factors contributing to the Grade 12 students suffering from mental
health illnesses or disorder.
5. What programs maybe recommend to protect Grade 12 students Mental Health
Condition amidst, COVID-19 Pandemic.
Scope, Limitation, and Delimitation
This study aims to determine the Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic in the Mental
Health Condition of Grade-12 Students in Tala Senior High School. This research
seeks to find an answer how and on what ways does COVID-19 Pandemic affects
the Mental Health Condition of the Grade 12 Students.
This study ia limited only to the number of respondents from tge choses
population.
The subject of the study are 91 students from Tala Senior High School’s Grade 12
sections. This includes the following strands 12 ABM, 12 HUMSS and 12 TVL. 26
of the respondents will come from ABM, 35 are from HUMSS and 30 are from TVL
for the School Year 2020-2021.
The data and the result of this study were dependent only on the responses by the
respondents.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant to the following:
To the School Principal. The School Principal will benefit from this study because
they will know the Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic to the Mental Health Condition of
Grade 12 students in Tala Senior High School so, they can make initial and
necessary actions in order to protect their student’s stability and to reduce the
numbers of Mental ill students.
To the Students. The students will be more aware about the serious cases of
Mental Health illnesses. They will be more knowledgeable about the serious matters
that are mostly experienced by people.
To the Teachers. The Teachers will benefit from this study, because they will know
the Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic to the Mental Health Condition of Grade 12
students in Tala Senior High School so, they can make initial and necessary actions
in order to protect their student’s stability and to reduce the numbers of Mental ill
students.
To the Parents. This study will be beneficial to the Parents because they will be
more aware about the possible outcomes once the Mental Health Condition of their
child is not well protected and guarded. Parents play an important role in children’s
development. As their parents, they can give them proper supervision, love, care and
guidance.
To the Future Researchers. This will be beneficial to the Future Researchers as it
will serve as their guide, basis and reference as they study about the same problem.
This study will serve as their guide, basis and reference as they study about the
same problem. This study will encourage the Future Researchers to do and to take
actions as the previous researchers did.
CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE, SYNTHESIS AND HYPOTHESIS
This chapter includes the Conceptual Literature, Review of Literature,
Synthesis, Hypothesis, Conceptual Framework and Definition of Terms used in this
study.
Conceptual Literature
This chapter of investigation are the ideas gathered related to the research
title “Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic in the Mental Health Condition of Grade-12
Students in Tala Senior High School.” The Conceptual Literature includes four
subtopics including, COVID-19 Pandemic, Effects of COVID-19 Pandemic, Mental
Health Condition and Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic in the Mental Health
Condition.
COVID-19 Pandemic. According to World Health Organization (2021),
COVID-19 Pandemic is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered
coronavirus. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) is the infectious disease caused
by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), which is a
respiratory pathogen and has great communicability and pathogenicity. People
infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness
and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those with
underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic
respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. The
COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the
nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also
practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).
Base in the study of (Fowler et al., 2020; Chen et al., 2020). In the Philippines,
the government imposed a nationwide mandatory lockdown, also referred to as
‘community quarantine’, starting in March 2020, forcing people to stay home and
restricting all forms of physical and social activities outside the home, with
exceptions made for frontline and essential workers. In addition, schools were
physically closed in mid-March 2020 and remain closed as of this writing, with
remote teaching and learning environments being implemented as a temporary
solution. These measures, along with other disease control strategies, were found to
effectively reduce the number of confirmed cases and deaths associated with
COVID-19 in the country.
According to Heymann et al. (2020), Following the WHO declaration, some
unprecedented measures have been adopted to control the COVID‐19 transmission
in countries around the globe, including lockdown in some cities.
Effects of COVID-19 Pandemic. According to World Health
Organization[WHO] (2020). The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic loss of
human life worldwide and presents an unprecedented challenge to public health,
food systems and the world of work. The economic and social disruption caused by
the pandemic is devastating. The pandemic has been affecting the entire food
system and has laid bare its fragility. Border closures, trade restrictions and
confinement measures have been preventing farmers from accessing markets,
including for buying inputs and selling their produce, and agricultural workers from
harvesting crops, thus disrupting domestic and international food supply chains and
reducing access to healthy, safe and diverse diets. The pandemic has decimated
jobs and placed millions of livelihoods at risk. As breadwinners lose jobs, fall ill and
die, the food security and nutrition of millions of women and men are under threat,
with those in low-income countries, particularly the most marginalized populations,
which include small-scale farmers and indigenous peoples, being hardest hit.
World Health Organization[WHO] (2020), states that countries dealing with
existing humanitarian crises or emergencies are particularly exposed to the effects of
COVID-19. Responding swiftly to the pandemic, while ensuring that humanitarian
and recovery assistance reaches those most in need, is critical.
Now is the time for global solidarity and support, especially with the most
vulnerable in our societies, particularly in the emerging and developing world. Only
together can we overcome the intertwined health and social and economic impacts
of the pandemic and prevent its escalation into a protracted humanitarian and food
security catastrophe, with the potential loss of already achieved development gains.
Mental Health Condition. In Conformity with, U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services (2001) Mental illness refers to all mental disorders that can be
diagnosed and “feature abnormalities in Cognition, emotion or mood, and the
highest integrative aspects of Human behavior, such as social Interactions. In this
report mental health will be defined as “a state of well-being whereby individuals
recognize their abilities, are able to cope with the normal stresses of life, work
productively and fruitfully, and make a contribution to their communities.” In
Agreement with, World Health Organization (2003), Mental health is often
understood as concept related to mental disorders. However, mental health can be
defined from a more general point of view that also comprises a positive dimension
of the concept.
According to the study of Main et al. (2011), The key characteristics and
unknown details of the event itself can increase people’s uncertainty about the
causes of the public health event and the means to deal with it; thus, they are prone
to experiencing stress manifesting as anxiety, fear, and other emotions.
Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic in the Mental Health Condition.
According to the study of Konstantinou & Konstantinou (2020). In regard to mental
health care, an acute public health event can act as a stressor. A stressor refers to a
type of environmental stimulus that leads to a specific psychological and
physiological response in an individual, which threatens the individual’s important
needs and coping ability.
At the same time, severe psychological stress can cause sleep disorders,
physical discomfort, and other consequences in individuals. University students are
in a critical period of their lives, forming an outlook on the world, life, and values;
therefore, public events of a large scale could have complex and profound multiple
effects on their physical and mental health.
Review of Related Literature
This part of the study discussed various published thesis and studies related
to the research.
Based on Social Psychology Research Center et al., (2020) study entitled
“Impact of coronavirus disease 2019 in the mental health condition” people were
generally worried about COVID‐19, and a high proportion of people had bad
emotions, such as fear, anger, sadness, and panic. Similarly, when paying too much
attention to pandemic information, excessive stimulation occurs, which weakens
emotional regulation and processing ability, which in turn causes anxiety and other
negative emotions.
In the same manner a study entitled “COVID-19 and mental health Condition”
Dong and Bouey (2020) has come up to the conclusion that the wide scope and
spread of COVID-19 could lead to a true mental health crisis, especially in countries
with high caseloads which would require both large-scale psychosocial crisis
interventions, and the incorporation of mental health care in disaster management
plans in the future. Highlighted the role of anxiety as the dominant emotional
response to an outbreak, and the need for adequate training of healthcare personnel
and the optimal use of technological advances to deliver mental health care.
Moreover, Asmundson and Taylor (2020) discussed that mental health impact
of COVID-19 from the point of view of health anxiety, arises from the
misinterpretation of perceived bodily sensations and changes, can be protective in
everyday life. However, during an outbreak of infectious disease, particularly in the
presence of inaccurate or exaggerated information from the media, health anxiety
can become excessive.
Gao et al. (2020) concluded in his study “Impact of coronavirus 2019 on the mental
health of university students in Sichuan Province, China” Severe psychological
stress can cause sleep disorders, physical discomfort, and other consequences in
individuals. Many reports revealed the psychological changes that university
students underwent during the pandemic period.
During the present COVID‐19 pandemic, many university students in most
countries are compelled to complete their studies at home, which has changed their
normal life and learning style. Similar to the SARS pandemic in 2003, we believe that
COVID‐19 pandemic may also have a major impact on the psychology of university
students; therefore, it is critical to pay attention to the psychological state of
university students during this difficult period.
Furthermore, Huang et al. (2003) in his study “ impacts of SARS in the
students” determined that the psychological state of students during that period, and
their results showed that the rate of anxiety symptoms was 9.5% and that of
depression symptoms was 29.6%.Keeping in mind the mental health status of
university students, measures to provide humanized support, especially
psychological support and intervention to alleviate their stress during the COVID‐19
crisis and confinement, are challenges that need to be solved urgently.
Synthesis (literature)
This portion discussed the summary of conceptual literature including its different
sub-topic similarities and differences to seeks different published thesis was also
discussed and explained. Both local and foreign studies in this study presented the
various ideas on Impacts of COVID-19 pandemic in the Mental Health Condition The
studies were designed to provide relevant information about a specific topic. The
foreign studies conducted by, Social Psychology Research Center et al., (2020),
Dong and Bouey (2020) and Asmundson and Taylor (2020) were highly relevant to
the present study and similar to the study of Gao et al. (2020) and Huang et al.
(2003) because all of their study dealt with the Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic in
the Mental Health Condition. However, they are differed from the present and other
mentioned studies in many aspects like the methodology used, setting of the study,
statistical treatment and assessment questionnaire.
Synthesis (conceptual)
The concept of COVID-19 Pandemic as stated by World Health Organization (2021)
is significant to the previous study because it helps the researcher in understanding
the concept of COVID -19 Pandemic. The concept “Effects of COVID-19 Pandemic
as stated by World Health Organization[WHO] (2020), is significant to the previous
study because it helps the researcher in understanding how these chronic disease
affects each and every one. The concept of Mental Health Condition as stated by
U.S Department of Health and Human Services (2001), is significant to the previous
study because it helps the researcher in investigating what is happening beyond the
doubling cases of Mental Health issues among people. The concept of Impacts of
COVID-19 Pandemic in the Mental Health Condition as stated by, Konstantinou &
Konstantinou (2020), is significant to the previous study because, it helps the
researcher in discovering how COVID-19 Pandemic impacted people’s Mental
Health Condition.

Definition of Terms:
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)- according to World Health Organization (WHO)
it is a new strain of coronavirus. 'CO' stands for corona, 'VI' for virus, and 'D' for
disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as '2019 novel coronavirus' or '2019-
nCoV.
Mental Health- a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional
well-being.
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2)- Is a novel
severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus. It was first isolated from three
people with pneumonia connected to the cluster of acute respiratory illness cases in
Wuhan. All structural features of the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus particle occur in
related coronaviruses in nature.
Pandemic- Is a disease outbreak that spreads across countries or continents. It
affects more people and takes more lives than an epidemic.
Stress- is any demand placed on your brain or physical body. People can report
feeling stressed when multiple competing demands are placed on them. The feeling
of being stressed can be triggered by an event that makes you feel frustrated or
nervous.
Anxiety- Anxiety is a feeling of fear, worry, or unease. It can be a reaction to stress,
or it can occur in people who are unable to identify significant stressors in their life.
Depression- constant feeling of sadness and loss of interest, which stops you doing
your normal activities.
Hypothesis
Null Hypothesis – Covid-19 Pandemic has no significant Impacts to the
Mental Health Condition of Grade 12 Students of Tala Senior High School.
Alternative Hypothesis - Covid-19 Pandemic has significant Impacts to the
Mental Health Condition of Grade 12 Students of Tala Senior High School.
CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHOD AND PROCEDURE
Research Design
This study entitled “Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic in the Mental Health Condition
of Grade 12 students in Tala Senior High School” was a qualitative type of research
since its purpose is to answer the questions: who, what, where, when and how
much. Descriptive Research Design is best to use in this study since its main
objective is to observe and report a certain phenomenon as it is happening.
According to the definition of Calderon & Gonzalez (2007), descriptive research is
concerned with conditions of relationships that exist; practices that prevail; beliefs;
processes that are going on; effects that are being felt; or trends that are developing.
This study aims to find the “Impacts of COVID-19 pandemic in the Mental Health
Condition of Grade 12 students in Tala Senior High School.
Subject of the Study
The respondents are selected from Grade 12 students of Tala Senior High School
from ABM, HUMSS and TVL strand.
Data Gathering Instrument
The main instrument used in gathering data was the researcher made
questionnaire to determine the Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic in the Mental Health
Condition of Grade 12 Students in Tala Senior High School. In the preparation of the
instrument, sets of questions known as survey questionnaire are posed to each
respondents and their responses are recorded and tallied on the paper.
Construction of Questionnaire.
Before constructing the questionnaire, the researchers consulted several
references and published materials. After reading and studying sample questionnaire
from related studies, the researchers prepared questionnaires and presented it to the
Research Teacher. The researchers confirmed the suggestions and comments of
the teacher. After doing the corrections and revisions, the researchers incorporated
the given suggestions and made the final draft which was then submitted for
approval.
Validation of Questionnaire.
For the validation of, the researchers prepared the first draft of the questions. The
draft of the questionnaire was presented to the teacher for comments and
suggestions. After revising, the researchers prepared the draft and presented it to
the teacher for approval. Construction, reconstruction and validation were made
possible through the help of the Research Teacher. The final copy of the
questionnaire was then validated by some experts.
Administration of Questionnaire.
After validation of questionnaire, the researchers asked permission to the
principal to administer the questionnaire through a formal letter of request. Upon the
approval, the researchers personally distributed and administered is to the
respondents. Researchers ensured that the respondents were able to answer the
entire questionnaire. After answering, the researchers collected the distributed
copies of the questionnaire and then started tallying and tabulating the data.
Data Gathering Procedure.
The procedure for gathering data started with the preparation of the letter of request
to conduct the study which was addressed to the principal of SHS within Tala
Elementary School. The researchers moved on to data gathering.
The researchers requested to give them few minutes to distribute and
administer the questionnaires. The reason for the personal distribution and
administration of questionnaires was to ensure that the questions would be
immediately addressed. With this, the researchers retrieved all the distributed copies
of the questionnaire.
Statistical Treatment of Data
The data obtained were tallied, analyzed and interpreted with the used of the
following statistical tools.
Frequency- This statistical treatment of the data was used in determining the
frequency of responses in each category.
Percentage- It is a descriptive statistic which determines what part of the total
respondents fall under certain categories. Frequency and percentage determine the
ratio of the frequency of the respondents falling in every category of the total
respondents in ranking. This was based on the formula:
f
% = × 100
n
Where,
%- percentage
f- number of response
n- denotes the total number of respondents
100- constant multiple
Ranking- This was also descriptive statistics based on Spear man's ranking
procedure which shows positional importance of an item of object discussed.
