Title: Godown Wiring: EEE1003 Electrical Workshop

This document describes an experiment on godown wiring circuits. The objective is to understand wiring of a godown. The circuit uses 3 lamps, 3 two-way switches, 1 one-way switch, a 12V source, and connecting wires. 6 cases of different switch configurations are described and the expected behavior of each lamp is stated. Experimental results match the expected results. The conclusion is that closing different switch combinations completes the circuit for only one lamp in each case, while the others remain off due to an open circuit.

GO-DOWN WIRING CIRCUIT

Aim/Objective:

1.To understand the wiring of go-down

Equipment/Components Required:

S.No Device Type Rating Quantity

1 Lamp Animated light 12V,6W 3
bulb
2 2-way switch SPDT 12V,5A 3
3 1-way switch SPST 12V,5A 1
4 Source (Vsine) 12V 1
5 Connecting wires As required

Note: Theoretical calculations should be done before selecting the Ammeter/Voltmeter and connecting the
ciruit.

Precautions:

Avoid loose connections. Meters should be adjusted to null deflection.

Connections must be verified before switching ON power supply.
Power supply should be switched OFF before making/breaking circuit
connections. Readings should be taken without parallax error.

Theory:

CASE-1 (S1-ON, S2-1, S3-1, S4-1)

Switch 1 in the given circuit is SPST and switches 2,3,4 are SPDT. S-1 is
connected to the first terminal of S-2. Hence the circuit is complete. S-3 and S-4
are not connected to S-1 hence, the circuit is open.

CASE-2 (S1-ON, S2-2, S3-1, S4-1)

In the given connection, S-1 is connected to the second terminal of S-2 and to
the first terminal of S-3. Hence, the circuit of L-2 is complete whereas it is open
for L-1 and L-3

CASE-3 (S1-ON, S2-1, S3-2, S4-1)

In the given circuit, S-1 is connected to the first terminal of S-2. Hence the
circuit is complete.

CASE-4 (S1-OFF, S2-1, S3-1, S4-1)

In the given connection S-1 is switched off and connected to the first terminal of
S-2. S-3 and S-4 are in 1 position. The circuit is open as S-1 is off.

3 GO-DOWN WIRING CIRCUIT | Student ID 20BEE0042

CASE-5(S1-OFF, S2-2, S3-1, S4-1)

Since S-1 is switched off, no current flows across the circuit.

CASE-6(S1-OFF, S2-1, S3-2, S4-1)

Since S-1 is switched off, no current flows across the circuit.

Calculations:

Total Power drawn by the circuit = 6 watts

Voltage of the circuit = 12 volts

P = V I COS Ø

P = V  I  1 (Assuming COS Ø = 1 for resistive load)

Current in the circuit (I) = Power (P) / (Voltage (V) x COS Ø)

= 6 W / (12 V  1) = 0.5 A.

Fuse rating of the circuit = rounding off the current to the nearest 5
= 5A (Normally fuses are available in the ratings of 5A/10A/15A

Analysis of Results & Conclusion:

CASE-1 (S1-ON, S2-1, S3-1, S4-1)

Lamp-1 glows but L-2 and L-3 do not glow as the circuit is complete in L-1 but
open in L-2 and L-3. The main switch S1 is connected to the first terminal of S2
and forms a complete circuit and the current flows across Lamp-1

CASE-2 (S1-ON, S2-2, S3-1, S4-1)

Lamp-2 glows in this case and L-1 and L-3 do not glow as S-3 is at position 2
and the circuit is complete for L-2 and the current flows across L-2

CASE-3 (S1-ON, S2-1, S3-2, S4-1)

Lamp-1 glows and L-2 and L-3 do not glow as the circuit is complete for Lamp-
1. The circuit is open for L-2 and L-3.

CASE-4 (S1-OFF, S2-1, S3-1, S4-1)

Neither of the lamp glow as S-1 is switched off. Hence, all the circuits are open
and no current flows across the bulbs.

CASE-5 (S1-OFF, S2-2, S3-1, S4-1)

Neither of the lamp glow as the main switch S1 is off. Hence, all the circuits are
open and no current flows across them.

CASE-6 (S1-OFF, S2-1, S3-2, S4-1)

Neither of the lamps glow as S-1 is switched off. Hence, all the circuits are open
