Lesson 2: Factoring Trinomials

GET STARTED!

In the previous lesson, you focused on volleyball. You learned about representing the
dimensions of a volleyball court. In this lesson, you will focus on basketball.

You also learned how to factor special products such as the difference between two
squares and perfect square trinomials. There are techniques you were able to apply in
factoring these special products. What if the given trinomial is not a perfect square
trinomial and its terms don’t have a common monomial factor? How do you think it can
be factored?

 Similar to volleyball, basketball players have different positions as well. Each player
should know their position so that they can do their task properly. Now, it’s time to know
more about the basketball court. It is important to know how much space the players
have because it helps in planning and strategizing.

Your first task is to determine the floor area of a basketball court given its
dimensions expressed in a polynomial. Write your answers in your notebook.

1. Dimensions = (x + 2) by (x + 8) meters
2. Dimensions = (x - 3) by (x - 7) meters
3. Dimensions = (x + 6) by (x - 1) meters
4. Dimensions = (x - 9) by (x + 1) meters

Multiply Binomials

Your second task is to determine the dimensions of a basketball court given its
floor area expressed in a polynomial. Write your answers in your notebook.
Share your answers in the forum.

1. Floor Area = (x2 + 4x + 3) meters2

2. Floor Area = (x2 - 5x + 4) meters2
3. Floor Area = (x2 + x - 6) meters2
4. Floor Area = (x2 - 3x - 10) meters2

a. What is the relationship between the constants in the factors and the
middle term of the given trinomial?
b. What is the relationship between the constants in the factors and the last
term of the given trinomial?
2. How are multiplying binomials related to factoring trinomials?
3. How do you find the factors of a trinomial? Come up with an organized
procedure.
