Background Information for Learners


Properties of Addition
- The process of adding numbers or putting two or more numbers together is called addition.
-The numbers being added are called addends.
-The answer in addition is called the sum or total.
-The plus sign (+) is the symbol for addition.
-If a number is added to zero (0) or zero (0) is added to any number, the sum is the number itself. This is called
the Zero or Identity Property of Addition.
Example 9+0 =9 or 0+9 = 9
-Changing the order or position of the addends does not change the sum. This called the Order or Commutative
Property of Addition.
Example 5+ 4 = 9 or 4 + 5 = 9
-Changing the grouping of the addends does not change the sum. This is called the Grouping or Associative
Property of Addition.
Example (5+3) + 9 = 8 + 9 =17

Addition of Two-to Three-Digit Numbers without and With Regrouping


Without Regrouping
Mang Ando harvested 354 ripe mangoes and 223 green mangoes. How many mangoes did he harvest
altogether?
To find the total number of mangoes, add 354 and 223. Align the digits according to their place value.

Ex. Find the sum of 432 and 253.

The sum of 432 and 253 is 685.
In adding numbers, we do the following steps.
1. Align the digits vertically according to place value.
2. Add the ones digits first, followed by the tens digits, and then the hundreds digits.

With Regrouping
749 + 198 =?
Align the numbers in a vertical position.
Add the ones digits. 9+8 = 17
The sum exceeds 9, we need to regroup. Write 7 in the ones place and carry 1 to the tens place.
Next, add the tens digits including the regrouped digit. 4+9+1 =14

Again, we need to regroup. Write 4 in the tens place and carry 1 to the hundreds place. Add the hundreds digits
including the regrouped digit. 7+1+1=9
So, we have 749+198=947
