Statement of Purpose

My name is Ghazi Zulhazmi Herry. I study in undergraduate program, Materials


Engineering, under the Faculty of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering in ITB (Bandung
Institute of Technology), Bandung, Indonesia. While I’m studying there, I learn about all aspect
which is related to material science and engineering, such as structure, properties, processing,
and performance of material. The detail of my course can be found in my official transcript that
I’ve attached with my application. I’m the person that interested in innovation, especially
innovation about materials. Nowadays, material science is one of the knowledge with high
awareness in the world and materials science and engineering always developing and making
innovation with development of the technology. I’m very challenged to participate in those
innovation to make human’s live better. My curiosity is large, mean that I always want to know
about the new things, like new theory of science, new culture, and new challenge. I can do a hard
effort to know about the new things or to do some researches. I have good personal
communication with other people, because with communication I can get any information that
useful for me and can be shared to other people.
KFUPM is one of the best university in Saudi Arabia. When I checked the mechanical
engineering there, I interested in the material science and engineering program. In that there are
many materials researches that being developed. Two of them is about material science and
nanotechnology. I’m very interested in those research, so if I’m accepted as a master student in
Material Science Engineering, I want to learn more deeply about material science engineering
and focus in doing researches about that knowledge. The laboratory equipment in the ME Lab is
more complete than in my current campus, so I can use it to improve my knowledge.
The kind of research focus I’m especially interested is about material innovation material
for solar cell. The innovation challenge is improve its efficiency, one of the way is replacing the
semiconductor by using novel nanomaterials called quantum dots. It can –theoritically- increase
the efficiency of solar cell about 50%. That’s very interesting, if that material can be made and
applied as semiconductor, we can gather the solar enegy much more and promise to replace
fossil energy. I had learning about it in the undergraduate program (Electronic and Magnetic
Material Course), but because of limitation in our laboratory I can’t continue to research about it.
So I plan to do further research about it in the ME Dept in KFUPM. As mentioned, I have plan to
be a material researcher or scientist who can makes human’s live better with innovation of
material.
I’m a devout moslem, so beside my intention to learn about material knowledge, I’m very
obsessed to visit two Holy Mosque, Masjidil Haram and Masjidin Nabawi. As student in one of
the university in Saudi, I think its more easy to perform Hajj or Umrah to those Holy Mosque.
The other hand, I found that the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Dept. in KFUPM have a
collaboration with ME Dept. MIT in research an educational program. So, if I accepted being a
master student and then finished my master program in ME Dept of KFUPM, I want to continue
my study to Mechanical or Material Engineering in MIT as a doctoral student.
