LESSON 5: Patterning
LESSON 5: Patterning
LESSON 5: Patterning
1. Axes
This features that must be created using one of several methods. The advantages to creating an axis is
that it can be rename, selected by name from the Feature Manager design tree and resized. In this
lesson it is used by first, selecting two planar faces and the option Two Planes and then the Two
points/Vertices- is selected to define an axis through them. Cylindrical/Conical Face is also selected to
define an axis through the rotational center. Lastly, a planar face and a point or vertex is selected to
define an axis normal to the plane through the point. This feature is also used to complete the part in
exercise 24 “Axes and Multiple Patterns” where it used front and right planes to create an axis.
2. Linear Pattern
This feature creates copies or instances, in a linear pattern controlled by a direction, a distance and the
number of copies. The axis can be an edge, axis, temporary axis or linear dimension. The instances are
dependent on the originals. Changes to the originals are passed on to the instanced features. In this
lesson’s example, it is used by starting the part named Grate is opened where the part contains the seed
feature that will be used in the pattern. The callout is attached to the geometry used to define the
pattern direction or axis. It contains the key settings for Spacing and Instances and is editable, just
double click the setting to change and retype the value. This feature is also used to create feature
patterns in exercise 19 “Linear Patterns”, exercise 21 “Skipping Instances”, exercise 22 “Linear and
Mirror Patterns” and exercise 24 “Axes and Multiple Patterns”
3. Circular Pattern
It creates multiple instances of one or more features spaced around an axis, creates copies or instances
in a circular pattern controlled by a center of rotation, an angle and the number of copies. The axis can
be a circular face, edge, axis, temporary axis or angular dimension. Changes to the originals are passed
onto the instanced features. In this lesson’s example, opening the part named Circular_Pattern as the
starting procedure, then the Pattern Axis is clicked after clicking the Circular Pattern. From settings,
Features to Pattern is clicked and the three features shown. The Angle is set to 360 and OK is then
clicked. This feature is also used to complete the part in exercise 23 “Circular Patterns” where it is fillet
for 12 total instances and exercise 24 “Axes and Multiple Patterns”
4. Mirror Pattern
This feature creates copy or instance, across a plane or planar face. The plane can be a plane or a planar
face. The instance is dependent on the original. Changes to the original propagate down to the mirrored
instance(s). In this lesson’s example, opening the Mirror_Pattern as the starting procedure to use this
feature, then the Mirror and the Right Plane are clicked and Keyed Hole 1 as the Feature of the Mirror.
Lastly, OK was clicked. This feature is also used to complete the part in exercise 21 “Skipping Instances”
and exercise 22 “Linear and Mirror Patterns”
5. Sketch Driven Pattern
This feature creates multiple instances based on points in a selected sketch. The sketch must exist
before the pattern is created. This pattern is intended for use where a linear type of pattern is required
but the standard Linear Pattern feature can not easily be utilized. Only point geometry is used by the
Sketch Driven Pattern. To start use this is by opening the Sketch_Driven where the part contains a seed
feature Hole and an existing linear pattern feature Standard Linear. This feature is also used to create a
feature pattern in exercise 20 “Sketch Driven Pattern” and exercise 24 “Axes and Multiple Patterns”
