What I Need to Know

Life comes from life. Have you ever wonder what your body is made of?
Or how your body maintains, adapts and changes through time? In this module
you are going to learn the “unseen workers” within your body that work hard in
order for you to enjoy life to the fullest. Enjoy reading the module and have fun in
answering all the activities prepared just for you.

After going through this module, you are expected to differentiate plant and
animal cells according to presence or absence of certain organelles. (S7LT-IIe-4)

Specifically, you are also expected to:

1. identify the cell organelles present in plant cell;

2. explain the importance of cell wall and chloroplast in plants; and

In our previous lesson you have learned that cells have so many workers,
the cell organelles, that work together to carry out life function.
In this module, it will expand your knowledge on plant cell. You will learn
the significant organelles that can only be found in a plant cell. These organelles
make the plants differ from the animals in some aspects.
Enjoy this lesson and have fun while discovering the amazing plant cell.

What’s New

A plant cell has almost the same organelles that with the animal cell but
there are organelles that are only found in plant cell. Can you name them?

Study the table below to understand the plant cell. Answer all the
questions in your science activity notebook.

A. The table enumerate the parts of the cell that are present or absent in plant
and animal cells.
Structure Cell A Cell B
Cell wall Absent Present
Plasma Membrane Present Present
Chloroplast Absent Present
Centrioles Present Absent
Nucleus Present Present

Question: Can you identify a plant cell? How about an animal cell?

B. You are asked to identify an unknown slide. Which of the following

characteristics could help you recognize that it is a plant cell?
i. presence of centrioles
ii. absence of cell wall
iii. rigid shape
iv. presence of chloroplast

6
What is It

What is a Plant Cell?

Both plant and animal cells contain nucleus along with similar organelles.
One of the distinctive aspects of a plant cell is the presence of a cell wall outside
the cell membrane.

Plants have an added

covering called the cell wall. It
provides support, protection, and
shape to the cell. The cell
containing cellulose.

Vacuoles in plant cell are

bigger than in animal cell. Figure 2. The Plant cell
Vacuoles are membrane-bound structures
that are commonly used for storing substances. There are many kinds of
vacuoles.

Chloroplasts is an elongated organelle enclosed by phospholipid

membrane. The chloroplast is shaped like a disc. Each chloroplast contains a
green colored pigment called chlorophyll required for the process of
photosynthesis. The chlorophyll absorbs light energy from the sun and uses it to
transform carbon dioxide and water into glucose.

7
What’s More

Activity 2: Label Me!

Hi there, have you already mastered all the organelles found in a plant
cell? Below are the names of the plant cell organelles. Match the diagram on the
right to its name on the left side. Write the letter only on your science activity
notebook.

its specific function. Choose your answer from the box below and write it in your
science activity notebook.

What I Can Do

To show your learning on our lesson, make your own model of a plant cell.
You can use any material available in your home like cardboards, egg shell, yarn,
toothpicks, Styrofoam and etc. Please take note on the important parts that are
only present in a plant cell.

The table below will serve as your basis as to the equivalent points that
you will receive in making your own plant cell model.
