English Language Arts and Reading 1st Grade: 112.3B 1A-E

Instructional Objective(s):

This will be Day 1 of a week long lesson. The students will learn about the voyage of the Mayflower and the difficulties
encountered by the Pilgrims during their first year in the New World and how the celebrated their first harvest.

Materials (for both Teacher and Students):

Crayons
The Pilgrims’ First Thanksgiving book by: Ann McGovern
The First Thanksgiving craft book (we will start making this and end it at the end of the week)
Website:
https://www.scholastic.com/scholastic_thanksgiving/index.html
T-Chart
Markers (Teacher)
Black, Brown, Tan, and White paper for craft
Glue stick
Scissors

Anticipatory Set / Focus Activity:

I will bring the students to the carpet and ask them what does Thanksgiving mean to you? Do you know who the pilgrims
were or where they came from? Class will discuss answers.

Body of Lesson, including Instructional Strategies and Teacher Modeling:

Guided Practice:

I will start by going to https://www.scholastic.com/scholastic_thanksgiving/index.html and having the students watch

the short video about the pilgrims and the first harvest. Once we finish with the video, we will discuss what we have learned
from the video. Then I will read “The Pilgrims’ First Thanksgiving” book to the students. We will discuss the book and what
was all in it. Then I will make a T-Chart “Thanksgiving” one side will have “Long Ago” the other side will have “Today”. On
the “Today” side I will ask the students to give me examples of what they do on Thanksgiving. Examples: We buy or food at
the grocery store, we watch the Macy’s Parade, we watch football, we celebrate with family and friends. Then on the “Long
Ago” side, I will ask the students to give me examples of things we learned from the video and book. Examples: Pilgrims
came to America, pilgrims traveled on the Mayflower, they grew their own food, and they celebrated with the Native
Americans.I will have the students go back to their desk at this time.
Independent Practice:
The students will go back to their seats. I will pass out their craft books. We will only be coloring the front cover and
putting together the first page since this will be one activity to run all week. I will also pass out their craft paper of each color.
The students will cut out all the pieces of the pilgrims and glue to the first page in designated area. They will also be reading
the first page and filling in the missing vocabulary word in the sentences. Example: Long ago, the King of England told the _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ that they must worship God at the King’s Church. They wanted religious freedom so they left England and
sailed across the sea to America. Once students finish they will move on to stations.

Closure / Conclusion:

The students so far have learned about the Pilgrims and the journey they took to America. They will use this information all
week long for the other assignments we have.

Assessment:

I will be doing this thorough the lesson. By asking the students questions, also by walking around at the end to make sure
everyone is doing the craft/activity correctly.

Re-Teach Procedures (if necessary);

We will review the information each day that we learned the day before.

Enrichment Activities:

Have the students that finish early sit quietly and read a book they have picked out.

Modifications for Special Needs:

For these students I will be assisting them if needed to do their craft book.

Guided Assistance

Topic: What type of lesson is this? (Direct Instruction, Concept Attainment, etc.)

■ Multiplication, Journaling, Photosynthesis, The Great Depression

■ NOT Math, Language Arts, Science, History, etc.

Purpose/Rationale:

■ Your purpose should tell why you are teaching what you are teaching.
■ Your purpose should relate to what you are teaching for real life application.

TEKS:

■ You should list the TEKS. For example, 1(a), 7(b), 8(f)
■ You do not need to type out what each of the TEKS specifically says.

Objective(s):
■ Specifically state what the students will learn, in observable and measureable terms
■ The student will demonstrate, create, apply, analyze…..:with 80% accuracy.

Teacher and Student Materials Needed:

Anticipatory Set/Focus:

■ How are you inviting the students into the lesson? How are you activating their schema?
■ Will it be a catch question, a demonstration, a class discussion, etc?
■ It should be a dynamic attention-getter and not include any of your teaching procedures or materials.

Guided Practice / Teacher Modeling:

■ This is the direct teach portion of the lesson. How will you impart the knowledge that students need to learn from
your lesson?
■ You should include at least three strategies to reach the different learning styles of your students. Group
discussion, K-W-L, and anticipation guides are good examples.

Instructional Input/Activities:

■ The guided or independent practice(s) should directly relate to your objective. What will your students do as a
group (small or large) and then independently to demonstrate that they have grasped the concept(s) you have
taught?

Closure/Summary:

■ What did the students learn?

■ How will they use this new information?

Assessment

■ How will you formally or informally assess the objective? What tools will you use?
■ What are your expectations with respect to demonstrated mastery? (eg., 75%? 80%?)

Enrichment

● How will you plan for those students who are stronger academically or “finish first”?

Modifications

● How will you effectively teach students with IEPs, 504s, or otherwise experiencing difficulties?
