Service Manual
Section 1
1.0 General Description
The HydraQuaker is a double-acting hydraulic drilling jar capable of delivering a
heavy impact, when a bottom hole assembly becomes stuck. The HydraQuaker
drilling jar is designed with simplicity and quality in mind. The tool is simple to
build, easy to dress, and is extremely durable. Designed to operate as an integral
part of a drill string, it can withstand normal drilling conditions of torque, pump
pressure, and temperatures up to 300 deg F [149 deg C] for standard seal kits or
500 deg F [260 deg C] for high temperature seal kits.

The HydraQuaker can also be assemble to be a single-acting hydraulic fishing

jar. The up-jarring only HydraQuaker has the same technical specification minus
the down jarring capability.

The HydraQuaker drilling jar can easily be racked as part of a stand of drill
collars because it is similar in length and diameter and has compatible
connections and slip setting areas.

In the drilling mode, the jarring mechanism is not active and is not affected by
normal drilling conditions or torque.

1.1 Control of HydraQuaker Drilling Jar

By adjusting the amount of surface push or pull (no torque or external
adjustments are required) the operator can deliver impacts in either
direction, while controlling the number of impacts in any given time frame.

The direction of impact is controlled, as shown in Figure 1-1.

• If the drill string becomes stuck on bottom, the drilling jar can deliver
impact in an ‘up-only’ direction.

2.0 Safety Procedures
OSC service and test equipment is designed to provide a safe service operation
when used as prescribed in the appropriate service manuals. If other than OSC
equipment is used for the service operations, the user must determine through
an appropriate professional that it provides comparable control and safe
operation for the disassembly, assembly, and test procedures.

Any person responsible for servicing of OSC tools shall be fully knowledgeable
concerning all safety procedures and require all service personnel to be
thoroughly trained in safe procedures as set forth in OSC service manuals and
tool service courses.

Use proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for servicing (incoming test,
disassembly, and assembly) and function testing of the tool.

• Keep unauthorized personnel away from tool during disassembly,

assembly, and testing.
• Be absolutely certain any pressure is depleted before removing
adapters or unscrewing service connections of the tool.
• Protect hands, face, and body with gloves, glasses, and safety face
shields at all times when depressurizing, pressurizing, and testing.
NOTE: Any additional information concerning OSC tools or equipment may be
obtained by contacting:

Section 2 Safety Procedures

2.1 Thread Galling Cautions

Galling can be caused by the following

• Dirty or damaged threads.

• Threads and shoulders not completely covered with thread lubricant
before assembly.
• Misalignment of the connection during assembly or disassembly.
• Applying a bending load when applying torque to the connection during
assembly or disassembly.
• Leakages allowing the connection to become dry or filled with abrasive
matter.

2.2 Steps to Prevent Galling

• Clean and dry connection threads and shoulders thoroughly.
• Apply thread lubricant adequately to connection threads and shoulder.
• Support parts as described in disassembly and assembly sections.
• Position the breakout heads close to the connection.
• Maintain Service Equipment.
• Torque connection to the recommended make-up torque.

2.3 To Break a Stuck Connection

Tap the outside surface of the connection with a hammer while slowly
unscrewing the part. It may be helpful to back-up and unscrew the part
several times to work the connection out.

If such methods fail, one part of the connection can sometimes be

machined away in an attempt to salvage the other.

Ultimately, the connection can be forced apart with a breakout unit. This
may scrap both parts.

OSC Private – Double-Acting Hydraulic Drilling Jar
Service Manual
Section 2 Safety Procedures

2.4 Shop Service

Clean, service, and perform incoming test on tool as soon as possible
after use.

Special attention to be use with the breakout machine spinner. It is critical

to properly align the parts when disassembly/assembly.

Jars are always redressed after each use, regardless of the number of run
hours or if they are fired. If the jar is not used on job (jar never went below
rotary table and was only on standby) redress is not required but it needs
to be function tested per Section 8.0 to ensure detent times are within
specifications.

If the jar sits on ready rack for a period of six months it must be function
tested again before shipping, and if it sits for 1 year it must be re-serviced.

2.5 Incoming Inspection

Visually inspect for damage to the external members and note abnormal
wear or markings.

2.6 Incoming Test

Incoming test results are recorded on the Tool Service Report, page 68.

Incoming tests are optional in an area that has very mild drilling
conditions, or that is experiencing no tool problems.

Incoming tests are an especially good defensive measure when tool

performance comes into question, when getting timely performance
information is difficult or when there is a customer complaint. Incoming
tests are viewed as necessary when tools come in but not immediately
torn down and serviced. In cases where tools are not serviced for some
time after use, incoming tests provide a quick method for determining
problems and potential tool damage, which can be taken up with the
customer sooner rather than later.

Conversely, incoming tests are not as critical when tools are turned
around quickly; therefore, damages are quickly noted at tear down and
can be followed up with the customer.

Incoming tests are recommended when any of the following exists:

• Customer complaint about tool performance.

• Drilling jar performance is questioned for any reason.
• Drilling jar is not serviced immediately after use.
• Service area just entering the market.

• Drilling conditions are considered rough.

2.7 Hydrogen Sulfide Test

Check for Hydrogen Sulfide residue using any Lead Acetate Tape
Hydrogen Sulfide Testing Kit. Place tape strips at all ports and vents were
the tape can come in contact with the well fluids left in the tool. Record
results on the Tool Service Report, page 68.

2.8 Service Guidelines for Hydrogen Sulfide Test Results

1) Reading of <5 PPM – normal service.
2) Reading of 5 PPM – disassemble (using adequate ventilation) and
then set the parts outside in the sunshine for 2-3 days and then
proceed with servicing.
NOTE: Be sure to remove any scale, grease, oil etc. so that the removal
of the hydrogen is not hindered. Have the parts thoroughly
inspected for any cracks before proceeding with servicing.

3) Reading of 10 PPM – disassemble (using adequate ventilation) and

then have the parts baked in an oven for 2 hours at 375° and then
proceed with servicing. If ovens are not readily available parts can be
set out for 1-2 weeks in warmer/sunny climates.
NOTE: Be sure to remove any scale, grease, oil etc. so that the removal
of the hydrogen is not hindered. Have the parts thoroughly
inspected for any cracks before proceeding with servicing.

4) Reading of 20 PPM - Notify InTouch and await service instructions.

NOTE: Record your reading on the Tool Service Report in the
“comments” area.

4.0 Inspection & Acceptance Criteria
Inspection should occur as soon as possible after tool and safety clamp is used.
Replace parts that do not comply to an acceptable condition. No machining or
reworking is to be performed without OSC approval.

Use the Critical Parts Inspection, page34, to record disposition of individual tool
parts.

4.1 Cleaning
1. Water-soak tool parts to remove dried, caked mud.

2. Use steam and a strong biodegradable cleaner to remove oil and

grease.

3. Allow steam cleaned parts to dry and cool before inspecting tool.

4.2 Inspection Procedures

Inspect all parts, including safety clamp, using the steps below, each time
the tool is disassembled.

• Inspect all rotary shouldered connections (RSC) per API. Inspection

procedures will meet the applicable content of latest API RP 7G,
Section 13.
• Inspect all make up shoulders and faces for galling and wash. Repair
or replace part as needed.
• Inspect all threads and relief area for corrosion pits, cuts, and gouges.
• Remove all seal packing from knocker, detent mandrel, and kelly
stabilizer.
• Check all external parts for wear down. Replace part when the OD
wear is below the diameters listed in Table 4-13.
• Heavy grooves or junk cuts that exceed minimum wear down are not
acceptable.
• OD Corrosion pitting exceeding the OD Wear down Tolerance is not
acceptable.
• Multiple grooves or cuts are in a small area are not acceptable.
• Use the Magnetic Particle Inspection Guideline, page17, for Magnetic
Particle Inspection of parts.
• Use the Coating/polished surface Guidelines, page18, to inspect
coating.

Section 4 Inspection & Acceptance Criteria

• Use the Part Inspection Guideline, page18, for inspection of individual

parts. Repair or replace part if condition noted in guideline exists.
• Use the Critical Parts Inspection, page34, to record part condition, part
diameters, and results from magnetic particle inspection.

4.3 Magnetic Particle Inspection Guideline

Refer to latest API RP 7G for guidelines. Subject critical stress areas to
Magnetic Particle Inspection at each service. All testing to be done for
transverse direction unless longitudinal cracking is observed, then
longitudinal testing shall be performed. Replace parts if indication is found
and cannot be removed by acceptable practice.

A characteristic of industrial hard chrome is micro cracking. Micro cracking

does not pose a problem or threat of failure to the part. Typical micro
cracking should not constitute criteria for rejecting a part.

Critical Stress Areas:

• Pin connections plus 1.0-in [25.4 mm] beyond the shoulder or end of
the thread.
• External component box connections (inside and outside] plus 1.0-in
[25.4 mm] beyond the connection.
• Internal component box connections (inside and outside] and all
grooves up to the end of the last groove or end of the relief or make-up
face.
• Fill plug holes and 2.0-in [50.8mm] either side.
• Large diameter changes plus 4.0-in [101.60 mm] either side.
• Seal packing grooves.
• The entire length of both spline sections plus 4.0-in [101.6 mm] either
side.
Service connections, Corrosion Pits, Cuts, and Gouges:

• Cracks of any length are not acceptable.

• Thread Areas-Pits, cuts and gouges in the service connection that
result in slight depressions in the flanks and crests of the threads are
acceptable as long as they do not extend more than 1.5-in [38.1 mm]
in length. Sharp bottom imperfections in the thread roots shall be
cause for rejection. Pits, cuts, and round bottom gouges that are in the
root of the thread are rejected if they are within two threads of the last
engaged thread. Pits, cuts, and round bottom gouges that are in the
root of the thread in other threads may not exceed 0.030-in [.76 mm]
depth.

ES21.40748H 18 of 87 HydraQuaker
OSC Private – Double-Acting Hydraulic Drilling Jar
Service Manual
Section 4 Inspection & Acceptance Criteria

• Stress Relief Area-The cylindrical section in back of the thread area

shall be free of round bottom corrosion, pits, cuts, or other stress risers
deeper than 0.060-in [1.52 mm] and sharp bottom imperfections
deeper than 0.030-in [.76 mm]. It is permissible to remove small areas
of corrosion by polishing the area with emery clothes of a flapper
wheel.

4.4 Coating/polished surface Guidelines

Record the condition of coated area on Critical Parts Inspection form. The
following guidelines may be tempered based on knowledge and
experience for a given area and environment tools will be utilized.

4.4.1 Hydraulic Fluid Seal Area

• The maximum acceptable pit diameter is .125-in [3.18 mm].
• The maximum acceptable pit depth is .016-in [.381mm].
• Multiple pits must be at least .375-in [9.53 mm] apart.
• A maximum of 3 pits in a 1.0-in x 1.0-in [25.40 mm x 25.40 mm]
square area are acceptable.
• Missing or chipped coating is not acceptable.
It is acceptable for chrome/HVOF outside of the seal area to be
pitted, missing, or chipped. Dress and remove sharp edges from
these areas.

7.0 Assembly
All rejected, non-useable parts, and other waste will be disposed of per local
environmental regulations or laws.

Thoroughly steam clean all parts. Pay particular attention to the ID’s of the
Pressure Cylinder and Drive Cylinder, OD of the Detent Mandrel, and the OD
and ID of the Connector Sub and Knocker. Ensure that no sediment remains in
either fill port of the Connector Sub. Dry all parts with shop air.

Inspect both pin faces of the connector sub for any dings, scratches, or
imperfections. If any imperfection is noticed, reface this surface to a 32 RMS
finish. Refer to Section 5.0 for resurfacing allowances.

Assembly begins with new, repaired, or reusable parts. All parts must be clean
and free from debris. If portable skid unit or automated service unit is being used,
every connection should be tapped at time of torque.

8.4 Detent Test Procedures

Test detent performance after cylinders are filled. Use Table 8-7 for load
and time. Use Table 8-8 for travel lengths. Record test data on the OSC
Tool Service Report (page 68) and file for reference. Each jar should be
tested for three (3) down detents and three (3) up detents.

Note: Down detent tests are not required for up-jarring only
HydraQuaker

Place the tool in a 25-in [635 mm] minimum stroke jar test rack. Use
appropriate hanger subs that will withstand jar detent loads. The test will
be for full detent “DOWN” and “UP”. It is acceptable to test alternating
down then up detent cycles. It is also acceptable to test all down detent
cycles and then test all up detent cycles.

If metering times are unsatisfactory, see Table 8-9 for assistance in

troubleshooting the problem.

The tool travels listed in Table 8-8 are for reference only and are not to be
used as an acceptance criteria for function test.

CAUTION During detent test stand away from the tool, wear proper
Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and follow all
safety procedures.

8.4.1 Full Detent Down

a. Check for full detent travel.
